A simple robotic spider toy that hangs on a chain (with its counterweight resting area) but when it senses a change in the lighting like an approaching friend, it runs up the chain to your shoulder where it is safe.

More specifically, it climbs up your body but counts the links on the chain. A passing shadow will only make it run up to the level of 5 links and then set back to starting postition, whereas a completely darkend room will make it climb your shoulder and stay there for a while. A simple internal mercury switch could tell it that it has reached your shoulder.

didn't people used to wear chained insects at one time?

But what if you're arachnophobic? Can you make some sort of mammalian alternative? Like a squirrel or something?
Letsbuildafort, Apr 15 2004

Yes, Po, many people still do.

       //mammalian alternative?//

That would be somewhere in the product line. I suggested 8 legs because they are rather elegant and spiders look good with jems if one wanted to go that route also.

its a dead creepy day at hb today.

if it bit my neck, it would scare me even more.
po, Apr 15 2004

"Is this thing bugging you ma'am?"

Too big a bug and the chain would just rotate.
FarmerJohn, Apr 15 2004

too long a chain and it might throttle you.

That's ultimately why I settled for the mercury switch. The first robots from the 60's could follow a line without having to touch it. The mercury switch could tell it that it reached the proper height, also considered a pendant as a resting place for the robot that would also act as a counterweight.

Could you remove the reference to RFID? You're treating it like a magic mutual detection mechanism, and that just doesn't work. It's a nice idea otherwise.

I deleted it, it wasn't really important to the idea. I figured that some company that may make this would work it out in such a way so that their products aren't afraid of each other.

What if someone was stood over your shoulder?
Cunninglinguist, Apr 16 2004

With its two front legs up in the air it would hiss at you.
sartep, Apr 16 2004

<Which leads me to the obvious> What if two people were simultaneously looking over each shoulder? (I'm imagining two men looking over a large breasted females shoulders, to get a good view).
Cunninglinguist, Apr 16 2004

She'd probably belt both you and your friend but it would be up to the personal preference of said theoretical female. :)

If it could be a fire breathing dragon or a venom spitting cobra... that could be interesting. ;)
