A metal pole with a series of five closely placed holes, running from the tip to the middle of the bat, facing the same direction, and containing shotgun shells. A single shell is fired every time the bat impacts on something, going to the next chamber down the bat in succession with each strike.
Now
even the worst melee combatant is now a death-spewing murder-machine, provided he doesn't hold it the wrong way and keeps his grip once it fires. Plus, the recoil can be used to get you back into your wind-up position for the next blow!

down to roost, it actually looks quite a lot like a
flintlock pistol suspended from its muzzle. |
