Free downloads such as Mozilla and winRAR are more popular than ever and yet their developers are rarely compensated for their open source work. At the same time, people spend hundreds of dollars a month tipping cab drivers, waiters, and other service providers. I suggest setting up a website that uses some sort of algorithm to calculate what each program deserves based on factors such as frequency of use and code complexity. However the calculations are done, the final suggestion is shown to the end user and he can follow etiquette and paypal the money to the developer. Software developers would be encouraged to add a link to the site in their programs next to where many put their virtual "tip jar" today. Tip your coder!

Great idea. Take out the 'less deserving' and I will happily [+] the posting :)

(A close friend of mine had a severe asthma attack once, and a cab driver rushed him to the hospital, probably saving his life.)
