Shared Intentions
Navigation directions displayed for other drivers to know your intentions | |
Do those we share the road with exercise more patience if
they know our intentions?
A display on the rear of the car shows other drivers the
current driving instruction our GPS device has given us as it
routes us to our destination.
Display might read "turn right in 1.2 miles" or "making
u-
turn
at first opportunity"
With this information other drivers can anticipate what our
next merge, lane change, or other maneuver will be and
make allowances, or better plan their maneuvers in traffic
to
make better use of the roads space and improve traffic
flow.
Maybe road rage would be reduced....

It would be good for courtesy but, because of the personal scale, no real change to traffic flow. The cars would need more of a collective communication blob for any real larger scale flow change. |
|
|
Though, If all the cars are networked, you could blindly change lines and the Gigahertz timing of the surrounding cars' computers will just slot you in. |
|
|
If your display says you were supposed to turn 8 miles ago
will that be the new "turn signal on for a half hour"? |

|
Additional information makes my driving worse. Still for professional drivers like a school bus with 30 screaming kids, it might be a welcome distraction. |

Your idea is a rear end collision just waiting to
happen, me thinks. |

[1Il0Oo] has had the patience to absorb Halfbakery
wisdom for just under six years before posting. I
think that deserves a bun. |
|
|
As for the idea, I'm wondering how big the display on
the back of the car has to be (or how good [1Il0Oo]'s
eyesight is). |
|
|
I was recently barged off the road quite viciously by a car with a religious sticker on the back: try praying. |

The collective wisdom of the bakery represents a
hegemony of common sense. Thank you all for your

Wait... is that a good thing? <Googles "hegemony";
"rule by hegs"?> |

[1Il0Oo] applied for an account in the summer of '09, has made no annoes, and just posted the first idea. Welcome to the Halfbakery, [1Il0Oo]. |
