Sexually Transmitted Vaccines

Grind ...hmm, away while helping the general population

All I hear about is breeding sterile mosquitoes while measles spreads due to anti-vaccer idiocy, and not everyone (including yours truly) is sufficiently diligent about getting their flue shot, etc.

The solution, it seems, is obvious.

We consider that [MB] and [bs0u0155] may be best qualified to critique this idea from a purely theoretical and scientific point of view, in an entirely dispassionate way.

Ugh, Aids these days... amirite?

       Tough crowd...

If I underhend the idea correctly, the idea is that the "vaccine" would take the form of something that's sexually transmissible.

Oddly enough, it's not a completely insane idea. However, it requires that the vaccine should be a live virus that remains active (growing) in the person who first has it, so that it can be passed on.

To take Herpes virus as an example, in theory you could create a herpes strain that produced no (or only very mild) symptoms, but which persisted in the body like normal herpes and which also induced resistance agains re-infection by natural herpes virus. As far as I know, even if that's possible it hasn't been done yet.

There are some cross-viral protections. For instance, cowpox (which is fairly harmless) protects against smallpox, which is how vaccination began. I don't know if different HSVs confer protection against eachother.

But it'll only work for viruses that remain active (like herpes). Having sex with someone who'd had cowpox 20 years ago wouldn't protect you against smallpox, as far as I know, because that someone wouldn't be carrying cowpox virus.

Not sure about chickenpox - I'm pretty sure it doesn't remain infectious after you've recovered, so it wouldn't work in this context.

What about mental health conditions ? We have noted that human males can acquire insanity from their female partners ...

I can see the day when a fullproof sexually-transmitted cure for HIV is developed and public information films instruct us to all 'do our duty' and procreate with as many near-strangers as possible. The best thing is, treatments are naturally directed toward the most promiscuous.
