Pity the cig smoker. They are so expensive, and if left unattended, will burn up all by themselves. If the smoker breaks of smoking for a drink or a chat, their valuable cig money burns away, uninhaled. This is a scheme by the cig companies to milk extra bucks out of the smoker.
Stogies do not
have this problem. Unpuffed, a stogie goes out, to be lit later if so desired. I propose that cigs be made this way as well. An unpuffed cig will languish then extinguish, and could even be replaced in the box for later enjoyment.

We cannot (and in a supposedly free society should not) stop people smoking, so this would be a nice feature where everyone smokers (less money) and non-smokers (less second hand smoke) benefit. Have a smoking croissant. |

Actually, if pure tobacco was left in a cigarette, smoldering, it usually goes out by itself. Its only by the addition of chemicals that the 'won't go out even in a stiff wind' cigarette was created. |

When I worked in the oil patch *they* would only let the men smoke roll your own smokes because they go out on their own.
If you got caught smoking tailor mades, you got skidded, no if's and's or butt's.
(sorry, that pun was lame even for me) |

I thought they contain nitrates to keep them burning. |
|
|
I think that the stuff which keeps them burning is one of the more harmful substances in cigarettes. Also, in my experience, rollies stink a lot less too. |
|
|
I heard on a recent science magazine program, that the stuff that keeps tailor made ciggies burning is salt petre! And I agree with alx. Rollies do smell less. My other half always smokes them and never smells smoky (unless we've been in a smoky pub) or has minging fag breath. |

Put fag in ashtray, balance 2p piece over business end. Do what you have to do, remove 2p piece, relight. |

Or try the patches, read Allan Carr, have laser/aroma/hypno/mumbo-jumbo therapy, yadda yadda yadda... |

I had no idea it was additives that keep them burning! I thought is was the looseness. But then pipes would burn out by themselves even more - and like a stogie, pipes self extinguish. The oil story is pretty neat. |

Live and learn! Thanks for the edification, [Curry]. |

[DrCurry] I did not know this was legislation |

damn..now I'm gonna have to use longer fuses on my oversize fireworks. In the past, I'd just break the filter off a cigarette and stick the fuse in the unlit end. When the cig would burn down to the fuse, it would light. By that time, I'd be well away from it. |
