Seed Paint

I like the idea of buckets of organic "paints" which would consist of various seeds suspended in nutritious adhesive solutions.

Paint the outside of your house with the solution, and hey presto, a few months later your outside walls are covered with the natural greens, yellows and purples of various mosses etc.

The seeds chosen would have to be shallow rooting to avoid damaging the walls onto which they were painted, and should not spread to other walls too aggressively.

The 'paints' could be mixed so that you had different colours for different seasons on different walls.

I like the idea of being able to age things quickly by growing moss and lichen on them quickly using a paint. Set builders will love this.

       I'd buy this.

I have seen on some gardening show a recipe for seeding moss on landscaping rocks. I think it used milk, but I didn't pay a lot of attention as it seemed to have little application where I live. Not much moss here in the desert.

Yes, it is easy to make moss paint, by using milk. Mix a handful of fresh moss with a cup of milk, blend until smooth. Paint it on any suitable surface and it will moss up within a couple of weeks, if the conditions are correct.

That's great! I'm going to see what I can moss...
GutPunchLullabies, Aug 06 2004

Wait, does the moss have to be actively sporulating at the time of blendage?
GutPunchLullabies, Aug 06 2004

       No

What an awesome idea, would be great if it could grow something edible as a bonus.

Olive, Lime, Saffron, Jade, White, Salmon pink, Rust, and Sulphur all show up as moss colours on the first two search pages when googling "coloured moss". It's a designer's paradise.

If you want lichens, I am told (never tried it) that taking a cow pat, mixing it into a bucket of water, then daubing it on new stonework, will make the wall look like it has been there centuries in just a few months. Who knows, maybe it would help with moss, too.

You want to try it and report back to us?
DrCurry, Aug 08 2004

Does anyone know whether the seeds would be hardy enough to withstand an aerosol version?
Fishrat, Aug 09 2004

Chocolate animals, furry handcuffs, elderberry cordial, iq tests for dogs and //Seeding areas with a mix of grass seed and hygroscopic gel// are all baked. None of them have much to do with this idea though. As far as I know, painting the exterior walls of your house in a choice of colours using moss seed is yet to be baked.

<aims at Zanzibar with a handful of Dr Curry's cowpat solution...>

this is good for parade floats. Just paint within the lines 4 days before the event and park it in the sun.
