Seems I cannot find a category that is mostly about horses and horse-
related stuff, like saddles.
Anyway, how many injuries might have been prevented if a startled
horse had not been able to throw its rider off the saddle, thanks to a
seat belt for the rider?
Obviously baked

Almost any flavor of handicapped person has gone on a trail ride. Seat belts are one of the ways this can be done safely for horse and rider. |

Highly dangerous and ill advised ... think about this for a moment - why don't they use seat belts on motorcycles ? |
I'm with [norm] - this is a dumb idea. |

First, if a horse actually wants to throw you, then that is a horse which you are better off off of. Being strapped to a horse that really wants you gone and is frustrated by your tenacity is not at all a good idea. |
Second, if the horse falls, it's better for you to fall off it completely as it does so. A little imagination will tell you what would happen to a person who is astride a horse and strapped in place as it falls and rolls. |
Yes, there will be situations where the horse slips, stumbles or refuses a fence but keeps its footing, where you might be better off staying on the horse. But in those instances (ie, cases where the horse remains on its legs), falling off will usually not cause terrible injury - you're falling about six feet. |
On balance, it's much more dangerous to be strapped on. |
Excellent. Will inevitably increase fatalities of horse-riders. |

Should be made compulsory. [+] |

You have a problem with horse riders? Me and the lads would be happy to come and chat about it in your kitchen, as long as the ceiling's high enough. |

Only in as much as they seem to think that sitting on a half-ton hairy malodorous block of muscle with the intelligence of a stunned goldfish is a good thing, partcularly if you nail huge lumps of metal to its feet. |

Horses are incredibly expensive, very dangerous, and perfectly useless as anything other than a primary component of budget-priced chilled ready meals. If you need a frisson of excitement in your conveyance, get a motorbike. |

You kids crack me up - you remind me of a bunch of young men discussing how annoying girls are and how you don't want to play with them. |

Of course, not everyone is fortunate enough to have had the horsing experiences I have (or a Moto Guzzi - you know who you are ;-) |
