Scissors You Can Run With

We all have been reproved for running with scissors at one time or another. (Funny story about that. The other day at the office I was stalking a co-worker with a garden shear and.. well..nevermind). The argument here is that you will accidentally stab someone (maybe yourself) if you have a pair of scissors swinging around in your hand.

So I propose scissors whose blades are spring-loaded and retract into the handle when pressure is applied in-line with the scissors. If you've ever seen those fake stage-knifes where you stab your buddy with it but the spring-loaded blade retracts into the handle so it doesn't really stab him. This works on the same principle. Since cutting puts pressure perpendicular to the blade, this would not affect the shearing capability of the scissors. So now you can give your kids sharp, pointy scissors and not worry.

On the first link: Well, no shit, Sherlock!

Did you hear about that other study that a group of scientists did? They found that water is wet. How about that? And there was another one...it was conclusively found to be true that newsposts that insulted the reader's intelligence generated angry, sarcastic replies!

Sorry. I just can't believe I wasted my time reading that article.

Let them run all they want. After the first accident they will understand what real pain is. Nature/god gave us two eyes so we can use one for experimenting.

Who wants to take bets that the study in the first link was under a govt research grant?

Seeing the popularity of this, I should probably come out with a poodle hat.

I'm thinking that scissors with permanently retracted blades would be safer still, only coming out in operation, i.e., when you squeeze the handles.
DrCurry, Aug 05 2003

Or they could make scissors with rounded ends.

Assuming for a second that the blades of the scissors would be shielded - you could hold the scissors with the handle out in front and as you run you could carry an egg (or two).
Have fun *and* play safe!

What I really want to know is, what happened after you stalked your co-worker with the garden shears...

Nothing happened to him. His boss had told him to 'trim' the workforce.

That might help with the "RunningWith Scissors" problem, now lets work on running with knives, screwdrivers, sticks, your Dad and last but not least, the baby brother or sister.

Running with any tool can be dangerous, regardless of how well protected or retractable the sharp end is. Even the stage knife is dangerous if it is in your pocket and you fall on your side in such a way that prevents the blade from retracting.
