The bike appears normal enough in compact mode, but as
the
rider pedals along, they twist a control that imparts some of
the
pedal motion into a cranking mechanism that expands the
scissor
lift body of the bike and raises the rider.
This would allow the rider to relatively safely ride
an 8 to 10
foot
high bike because he wouldn't need to perch precariously on
the
very tall bike while starting to pedal and keeping it from
falling
over. He merely gets up to speed and raises the bike as he
goes.
Getting off is easy as well since he just lowers the bike
while it's moving and stable and stops and dismounts as he
would with
a
regular bike.

I think this should be automatic. Then when you slow down you will automatically come back down. |
Also, given the choice, some people might opt to keep the seat low while traveling at speed and still think they were cool. We can't have that. |
This may be one of the most awesome ideas I have encountered today, and it's been quite a busy day here at MaxCo. |
I think this is a good idea, except the opposite. Have the rider standing up more, the slower they're going. Of course I also think it should be a tricycle, enclosed and powered. |
Double bun if you add fat-bike tires so it's ready to plow through snowbanks, hoisting the rider high above the action! |

By the way, I was asked how the chain would expand, you
would have 3 or 4 sections that just pivoted along with the
scissor sections. Probably needs a a drawing. |
Just picture each of the scissor sections having a hub at each
end with a chain wrapped around them. |
Of course a simpler version would just have the wheels on
two extendable / collapsible telescoping tubes. |
The scissor thing is cooler though. |
Wouldn't there be more front on drag surface? |

Whilst looking for my own facile contributions, I found Jinbish's take on this, circa May 15 2009...link |

Great idea. When riding up hills, one could use the stored
kinetic energy to assist with the pedalling. When the road
levels out, re-extend the scissor mechanism to maximum
height. |
//Also, you would probably need to raise the whole bike frame rather than just the saddle |
Last thought....bit tricky engineering-wise, but a bike with an expansible front wheel...so riding on the street it's standard bike config, braking expands the front wheel to penny-farthing mode, so elevating the rider.... |
Not too hard, have sliding concentric rim sections, and telescopic spokes and forks? |
Sci-sor is a lessor known ancient penny-farthing autobot with arch enemy, the decepticon Tramatron. |
