...without sarcasm.
A sarcasm lock key, that would reverse italicize your text might help communicate your tone without the need for smiley's.
The Sarcasm Mark

Nice idea. :-| Smiley's what? |
Without the need for Smiley's annoying smilies, is what I meant. |
This inevitably leads to the problem of dealing with meta-sarcasm, those sarcastic remarks whose sole target are previously written or uttered sarcastic remarks. |
Well, doesn't this idea just suck. [+] |
You know that you can edit your idea (e.g. to fix glaring typos), right? |
Amazing! could there also be something to translate plain text into sarcasm? Sometimes I'm just too nice. |
I exclusively use sarcasm as a
communication tool at work. Such a
device would be welcomed by my
associates, who often cannot distinguish
my intent. |
Imagine if you accidently sent all text as sarcasm... |
Dear Jane,
It's such a shame you didn't see me, yesterday. I really missed you. You would have looked so nice in your new clothes.
Please, please, try to come again real soon.
Lots of love,
Ling. |
And forgetting to switch the text to sarcastic: |
Dear Ling,
Your email was so nice. It's just what I wanted after a terrible day. Please make sure you keep sending them, as they are so uplifting.
Lots and lots of love,
Jane |

a canal pun surely? quite funny, if rather geospecific. |
i like this idea a lot. i have often encountered the problem of losing inflection and tone in emails. bun. |

What would the indicator be like? I mean, would the Sarcasm Lock key have a RED LED which glows RED when active, and flashing Red/Crimson when de-activated - This might also imply a Sarcasm-shift key for short sections of text which demand sarcasm. But, what of other forms of irony, such as hyperbole, dry understatement and rhetoric? I suppose you'd have keys for them, too! |
If this was available, a new art would quickly emerge: the sarcastic use of the sarcasm lock, a sort of second-degree sarcasm. |
<real sarcasm><fake sarcasm>Your party sucked!</fs></rs> |
I don't get it. Could you please explain the idea? |
but what if you usually deliver sarcasm deadpan ? |
I have always preferred, in this venue and all others, to let those I am addressing decide for themselves whether or not I am being sarcastic. It's much more fun for me, and allows people to choose not to be insulted. |
No, I really didn't get it. |
// allows people to choose not to be insulted // |
But what if you're speaking to Americans ... ? |
I am American, but to answer your greater question: most
don't understand me, but choose to be insulted anyway. |
