SMS tickertape

Text messages printed out on edible paper tape

At a certain period in history, or so the books tell me, no respectable business was without a tickertape machine. It would hammer out the day's news on a long paper tape which would be cut and pasted for a permanent record.

Now no respectable gent is without his portable phone which has the capability of receiving text messages. But the mode of delivery is a bit of a disappointment. I wish for more fanfare, more ceremony. A bit of longing for the good old days, if you like.

An old fashioned top hat has built into it a supply of edible paper tape, a printer with edible ink and a GSM set. Received messages will be torn off, scrutinised and pocketed if it needs saving. Casual messages get thrown in the trash. And, this is where the edible bit comes in - confidential messages are eaten after perusal.

Hasty pic - but you would get the idea anyway. [neelandan, Oct 05 2004]

Annotation:

You could use a tiny dot matrix attachment on the end of your mobile, with cartridges of paper that look like small boxes of 'floss'. Ah what the hell - I like the hat better.

.... and runs off only two car batteries ?

       (+) for an amusing idea.

I'm not really understanding the appeal of all the current-tech-made-retro ideas.

So instead of a "beep beep" when a message came in, you'd get "rat-a-tat-a-tat-a-tat-a"? Any opinions as to which would be annoying?

On the other hand, I can see the comedy value in a ribbon of paper spooling out of your trouser pocket.

This should be a cartoon in Punch magazine or Private Eye +
