Robot hand dexterity is still in its infancy. Working
towards
getting robot hands to do the tricks in the link would: a)
go
a long way towards
developing the art. b) Get
a lot of investor attention and c) be a historical
technological achievement.
Once a pair of robot hands could do
everything these
amazingly talented human card manipulators can, we'll
have the technology to start applying these fine tuned
machines to doing things like surgery or other tasks that
need amazing dexterity.
My hope is that by setting the bar so high, new
approaches will have to be looked at to get the job
done.
ADDENEUM: And where will the yearly conference /
competition be held? You guessed it.
When robot hands can do this...

polymer robot hand thing

Uhh... yea, not quite there yet.

Ummm, OK, a little closer. Just a little.

Of course you are right [+] |

but... I saw a nonrobot card shuffler for about $19.99 once. |
|
|
Get those robot hands down to 19.99! |
|
|
Come to think of it I have seen a drone for about $5.99
Change those rotating wings to blobs of polymer and clever-
up the rotators and you might have something like [link]
that flies. |

Wow B, what an incredible link! |
|
|
I'm struck with two things watching those videos,
how far we've come and how far we have to go to get
those card manipulations done. |
|
|
robochef...doesn't do cards, but doesn't go to pieces if
the creme brulee goes pear shaped. Link. |
|
|
Again, thanks for the link, but look at the automaton vs
human comparison. If a human were moving like this you'd
assume he had a stroke. |
|
|
I'm wondering if we're going down the wrong path here. |
|
|
Simply shuffle the cards virtually in memory, and
then have the robot print them out in the correct
order (ideally face-down if during a game of poker so
as not to upset anyone) |
