When I laugh at an email or online post I
occasionally
will actually laugh out loud, but most if the time I just
do
that
huffing thing that doesn't have a name. It's that one beat
exhale
almost like a very weak cough.
However, I want to let the
person know their humor was appreciated
so I type LOL.
But, I didn't LOL. I feel like I'm spinning a web of lies
and turning the internet into a mockery.
I humbly, even sheepishly suggest it be called a "snarf"
because it should be called something.
Snarf, because, LOL is a lie and you know it. It's sort of
like
fart spelled sideways which is kind of funny too. Not
really,
but sort of.
Forget all that. LL to replace LOL is the way to go.

How about an animated emoji doing this?

EDIT: I think your site's broken; emojis aren't working. |
[+] I know what you mean. I was in a meeting where I texted my coworker who was sitting a few rows across from me. She responded with "LOL" to acknowledge the humor in what I was saying even though she barely cracked a smile. |
How about LAL - laughing a little? |
I like that. I like LL even better. "Little Laugh". |
It isn't confusing because it still contains the main
parts of... I'm excited about this! It still contains
the main parts of "laugh out loud" but removes the
diabolical lies portion, the "out loud" is what needs
to be purged and this does it with minimum
confusion. |
Max, I think I'll call this a co-invention and I'm
going to try to make this a thing. As I think I
mentioned, I did create a term that's in common
usage today, a slang word for a particular garment.
(Please don't make me tell the story again.) The
way terms get created is by having somebody
associated with mass media basically explain and
describe it to millions of people. |
"LL" meaing little laugh is a necessary and practical
invention. |
Again, people who have never seen this won't be
confused, worst case they'll think the O was left
out. |
One more thing. I like that it's shorter than laugh out
loud because a little laugh is shorter. It's got kind of
an
intuitive aspect to it. |
I could even see this translating to speech. Somebody
hears a mildly funny line and says "LL." while
chuckling. |
Sniggering slightly - "SS" ? |
LL. I think that one's taken. |
Even if it's in a runic typeface that looks like two lightning flashes ? |
Mmmmm, yea. Definitely might be misconstrued. |
Yes, everyone knows "SS" stands for "Semiotic Solutions". You
wouldn't want to be associated with semioticians. |
There's no sign that you assertion is valid ... |
Semiotic solutions are all well and good, but it's very hard to get the semiotician to dissolve. |
Actually, HF is a terrible choice for dissolving bodies in, as is HCl. (You can dip your finger in conc. HCl with no adverse effects; this is a great way to win bets.) |
Is it possible to still win the bet by dipping someone else's finger
in the HCl ? |
Does said finger still need to be attached to anyone ? |
It's not necessary. Truthfully, you can place your very own finger in conc (about 18M) HCl for a minute or two, as long as you have no cuts or grazes on it. |
Actually, to be fair, there, there are harmless semioticians (just as
there are harmless snakes, and hover flies that only *look* like
stinging insects). It's just that the harmful ones have had far
more impact. |
The acid test here is whether they are "nominalists" or not. If they
are, then they are not so much expounding hypotheses as
declaring an intent to use other people as human airbags
between themselves and reality. |
On the other hand, a benign semiotician might be able to help
with this idea. |
HB? I doubt that one is used for anything. (Harder
Breathing) |
... or, derivatively, "helping bear". |
Hans Bethe? Hilaire Belloc? Humphrey Bogart? Halle Berry? |
"Higgs Boson", you ignorant shower. |
Due to The Simpsons, Haha is usually at someone. |
LOL is ambiguous in this respect, as would LL be. Snarf has an 'at' feel to it, which would be quite open and honest. |
Probably with all interpersonal interactions, this fully depends on the mode and caliber of the connection. |
I just can't get on board with this idea! you might not
literally laugh out loud with lol or haha but it still signifies a
smile or a release of emotion, now if you actually laugh
people usually type more ha's like hahahah or lmao or rofl or
lolllllllll.
it's like we've gone up a threshold :D snarf sounds like snark
it might get conufsinkgduhkdmdv4xectgvmb |
Snarf, it much be said, sounds a little bit like "snarky"
which has a bit of a derisive twinge to it. |
I do use snarf though and it seems to be the closest
thing to describe what actually happened. It's proven
in the field. |

In other inappropriate news, the whole of
Italy is up on a sexual harassment charge.// |
That inspired another one, "AL" for actual laugh. |
Dang Big, those were two back to back professional
quality jokes. Good stuff. I did actually laugh. |
How about "I did actually laugh"? IDAL? No?
Nevermind. |
As I've said before, I'm 99% sure I did create a
popular term
quite by accident so I should be able to do it
again. To repeat this you need to get
the word out through some media to millions of
people. My "wife beater shirt" expression was
spread primarily through radio interviews back
during the dawn of the internet so that's not going
to repeat itself. With the internet, the ultimate
pure democracy, an idea that syncs with the public
should be able to grow on its own. |
Any ideas on how to make "snarf" the replacement
for LOL or Haha? Contact the Institute For
International Internet Acronyms? |
On a very small scale, might want to just try it and
see if you get a "I get it" response back, meaning
they don't say anything or a "What the f is snarf?". |
If anybody ever tries it let me know how it works. |
I know a guy who adopted the chat so much that he would
show his teeth breafly and then return to his former posture,
also laughed with the way you would read the Hebrew writing
for hahaha which is KhKhKhKh. |

back in the late 80's and early 90's on Fidonet (I
know, I'm old), we used to *grin* at amusing posts.
No noise needed! |
Probably time to have an animated emoji on this one
doing what's in the link. (without the coffee) |
99% of my LOLs indicate me actually me doing this. |
