This clock would have no hands, dials or cogs. It would simply be a round face upon which the words "You already know the time, you just don't remember that you know it" would be printed. You would then have to consider external factors such as the position of the sun in the sky, the actions
of the people and/or animals around you or how long it would have been since you last saw a normal clock.
This would encourage critical thinking and, over time, lessen our dependance on clocks. We would probably also learn the insignificance of perfect time-keeping.
Shameless promotion
Times_20and_20Seasons I did this one back before the crash both as a tribute to John and a subtle warning when I sensed that people were getting a bit clock-worn. [RayfordSteele, Aug 13 2005]
A memorial to [FarmerJohn]
http://www.halfbakery.com/user/FarmerJohn I defy anyone to write anything better than this. [wagster, Sep 06 2005]

This is very Matrix. There is no clock. |
I don't need a clock, I've got the time written down on a piece of paper. |
this idea *title* should be the one used to
mark [FarmerJohn]'s outstanding
contribution to the 'bakery. |
Unfortunately, I don't think the idea is
much cop. |

Shakes head -- looks at wrist --- repeats. "My watch is self-winding". |
I know many people that could benifit from something like this. If I saw something like this on a shelf, I would buy a one for those people. It would help them no longer be addicted to their watches or scheduales. I personally think that the more you schedule you life the less you actually *live*. But that is just me, I am all about be spontaneous. |

//agree with skin.// Shakes head - looks at annos - ? |

Whilst I'm sure FJ deserves a tribute for his contributions, I do not consider myself worthy of writing one. Perhaps you could give it a try [jon]. |
\\Isn't this just a sign?\\ I was considering a clock as an inorganic object that would assist you in finding the time. By that definition a sign and a clock are not mutually exclusive. |
[+] for encouraging thought. Regarding the above [FJ] tribute, let (s)he without a bad idea cast the first bone. |

Can anyone think of such a baker. I have tried to create a view to find one but have been unsuccessful. The best I can think of is [johng], but he is no longer with us. |
(I realise that you were being figurative [DocBrown], but it sounds like a worthy pursuit) |
I quite like this idea. I have spent periods of my life working outdoors without a watch and you can get pretty good at estimating the time (I could get +/- 10mins at one point, just from the 'feel') - it's nice to break free of the clock. |
As regards a memorial for [FJ], I'd like to think he'll return at some point, a memorial seems a bit final. Besides, there is an excellent memorial already (link). |
As opposed to, say a wall or a fence or any number of other items. |
"I was considering a clock as an inorganic object that would assist you in finding the time" - I have to say I am more accustomed to clocks which actually tell me the time rather than guide me in the right direction. <Looks at watch> - It says it's about two-ish...give or take... |
