My local authority used to have something on its website
about how our recycling was sorted. So, shredders cut things
up, magnets lift out ferrous stuff, eddy currents push
non-ferrous metals off the conveyer, blowers take paper
away, different grade plastics are floated off in different
salinities
of water, etc. - it all sounds amazing. This idea is to
have a massive slot machine where people can put their
recycling in and watch it be shredded and sorted.
In
principle, this is exactly the same as those charity collection
boxes which children like putting money in because the coin
can be seen spiralling down a funnel, or clacking its way
down a complicated path.

If I put in my recycling and pull the lever and get 3
used soda cans in a row, how many pounds of scrap
aluminium does the slot machine pay out? |

We all could travolator through the machine in perspex viewing tubes, getting up close to the action. |
