A number of emerging technological trends are ripe for juxtaposition:

1) RFID implants have been inserted into pets for many years, for identification.

2) Energy-harvesting chips based on vibration, ambient temperature differentials, etc, are gaining in capability.

3) Low-power GPS technology is expected to follow the downward size/cost path.

So the idea is to combine these, and include various additional microelectronic sensors / power harvestors (thermometry, nano-scale chemical analysis) in the pet-injectible tags to allow remote monitoring of pet location / health / conditions.

(Purposely genericised to avoid [8/7] #include.)

Mightn't work on cats... they move about then generally fall asleep on rooftops. (No work->No motion->No power->No GPS->No work)... Perhaps, (and as I'm typing I'm thinking it ought to be a new post), a special solar panel for cats? [+]

[csea], did you imagine, for a moment, that this idea would NOT eventually turn toward cats? Hmmm. <Here's GROG wondering if these Pet Metrics will still work if put through the rigors of that noble game, Skeet The Kitty> Let's try, shall we? PULL! (...Bun!... ... ... ... ... [+])

Boy, all these [delete] links just staring at me, waiting to be used.

Perhaps the idea should be extended to include other life forms besides pets...
