Portrait Display

An Information Appliance with a Portrait Display

The screens on most information appliances are arranged like computer displays, which are in turn arranged like televisions (partially because you could increase character resolution without changing the number of scan lines).

This doesn't make particularly good use of the limited and expensive (both in dollars and battery life) LCD screen real-estate that information appliances have.

Worse still, scrolling tends to be cumbersome on these devices, and all but the shortest web pages require a lot of vertical scrolling.

So how about a 600x800 LCD screen? I can see the downside that most of the flashier web sites are arranged for at least 640 pixels wide, but maybe you could put a little "mouse wheel" on it to do the scrolling?
