This would be marketed as a device to use safely and
privately in public, so that simply using it would enable
you
to deny that you were watching porn with it. This is why
it
can't just be a monitor.
It resembles an ordinary tablet PC, with two differences.
Firstly, it uses a greyscale
traditional LCD with a narrow
viewing angle. Secondly, the polarising filter is omitted
so
that it's almost blank to the casual viewer. It comes,
however, with a pair of polarising glasses which enable
the
user to see what's going on on the screen. Moreover,
due
to the narrow viewing angle, another viewer is unlikely
to
be able to get themselves lined up precisely enough to
see
your porn.
Not suitable for people who are into literally blue movies.
And to be frank, it can actually also be used for its
stated purpose too.
I think this is slightly redundant with [MickeyTheFish]'s idea
Your_20Eyes_20Only_20Screen - also see my Jul 17 2000 annotation for mention of a screen viewable only within a narrow angle of view. [hippo, Sep 22 2011]

Is this kind of like mime porn? |
|
|
Ah, forgot about the audio. That could be done
though, with discreet earphones. |
|
|
Wouldn't it be far simpler and cheaper to simply wear a T shirt bearing the words "I like porn", thereby circumventing the whole embarrasment issue? |
|
|
Now please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't porn for
wanking at? How does this device polarise your genitals? |
|
|
That could be printed on the back of the tablet, [Twizz]. |
|
|
Ah, but [zen_tom], this is highly refined and arcane porn where the sexual arousal occurs on a much higher level. You'll be needing a head band. |
|
|
I can't think of a way, so i'll just have to say i don't
think [ZT]'s objection has to be a problem and leave
it at that. |
|
|
We could decouple the porn thing, and just make it
a "pro-secrecy" display? But then it's just half an LCD
display, visible only to those who wear polarised
eyewear. That's the intended product audience, and
anyone else who happens to wear Maui Jim, Oakley
or similarly polarised products from other common
eyewear purveyors. |

Grayscale porn that gives me a headache? I'll pass. |
|
|
is this just a strong desire to not share porn or is it that you will be looking at porn with children/the easily offended nearby. if the answer is the latter then you are quite weird. do you review or edit porn perhaps? |

This was mainly inspired by the screen inverter for
porn thing. However, as you may remember, a
couple of years back i posted an idea for a "Filthy
A&P Textbook", where anatomy and physiology
were made more memorable by connecting
everything to sex. If i'm really serious about that,
and i honestly think i may be, it isn't the kind of
thing i want to be working on in the open with
children around, so the choice is laptop or doing it
when there are no children here, and since my
main work is doing workshops with home
educated children, that rarely happens. |
|
|
So to some degree i am serious about this, i do
think the A&P textbook could work (self-
published) and i don't want children to see what
i'm doing. Then again, if they are around, they
should have my full attention anyway, except
during breaks. |

I'm sure I've seen/read about the 'remove front polariser and wear polarised glasses' thing in the real world, but I don't have time to hunt for it. Probably in Popular Science or something. |
|
|
Rotating the polarising filters would invert the
screen, so this bakes the other idea. |
|
|
Apple actually patented you one better (link). |
|
|
My apologies to those of the fairer sex, but shouldn't
a tablet made for porn have some mention of
waterproofing or sanitizing? Heck, seeing as most
tablets get so much use in the bathroom, shouldn't all
tablets be sanitized for our protection? |
|
|
I've seen such privacy screens made on a DIY basis. The
usual process is to peel the output polarizer off of the LCD
panel, cut it up, and make glasses out of it, being careful
about the orientation. As far as I know, they support color
just fine. |
|
|
I'm generally interested in the "sociology" of tablets,
laptops and the like, because some of them block
interaction and others encourage it, and I think this is
partly down to the size and shape of the screen. |
