Piezoelectric shock therapy

A jolt for your jaw!

I have a serious problem with grinding my teeth. I grind when I sleep, I grind when I'm awake, and I don't even know I'm doing it. What I propose (and I really hope this is baked and works) is simple: a mouthpiece to wear inside the mouth, as you would a football mouthguard. Molded inside the mouthpiece is a small piezo 'snapper' like a gas grill ingnitor. Whenever you start to grind, the piezo snaps and gives you a little slightly painful shock in the mouth. Eventually, you can learn subconciously not to grind your teeth. Hopefully.

Sounds like something Dr. Orin Scrivello, D.D.S. would come up with.

Place a dung beetle delicately between your molars. When you start to grind, you'll wish you hadn't.

Of course I have and use a nightguard, but for me it only stops the abrasive damage to my teeth. It doesn't stop the grinding, or reduce the enormous pressure exerted on the teeth, or the sore jaw muscles.

BrauBeaton: Your solution doesn't seem to prevent grinding, it just keeps it from happening while wearing the device. Witty's idea is designed to prevent it altogether.

What happens when you need to chew something? Can you turn them off?

Hmm...alternately, can piezo be used to power medical implants? Hmm... Well, no sense halbaking that, I'd never get more than half a croissant... and since I'd have to use the dreaded "P" word, I'd be as likely to get 2 1/2 fishbones.

Of course, that many fishbones would be a new record for me... if I could make it bad enough.
