Pet Fly
Ideal, no-maintenance beginner's pet | |
Catch a bluebottle but do not harm it. Very carefully hold it
down and place a small speck of superglue on its underside
and glue a piece of long cotton to it. Then hold on to the
other end of the cotton and go for a stroll with your new pet
fly, which can be reeled in at a whim.
The pet
fly usually only lasts about 2 - 3 days.

Don't kids in some countries catch dragonflies and put them on a leash? And then there's Eric the half-a-bee... |

I want a licence for my pet bee Eric.
Eric the half a bee what a lovely song.
Pet fly huh. My brother and I went a step further. We had pet walks. A walk is a fly without wings. Yes you catch a fly and pull off its wings and now it can only walk hence the name. Walks however do not live that long. Usually a couple of days. They are however amusing to watch.
We also had a fly grave. Basically you caught a fly and left it in a cork bottle, we would leave them in there and had quite a collection. At home they now have a venus fly trap.
I also have seen somewhere instructions for a fly powered aircraft. You need at least two flies for that. |

...or possibly institutionalized. |

We did this experiment at high school. We put the flies in the fridge until they were unconscious, then attached string to their bodies under their wings using hot wax. We taped the other end of the string to our desks and when they woke up they would fly round and round in circles on the end of the string. They had access to sugar and water it was discovered that they could only fly for a maximum of 5 minutes before requiring food, which by the way they would suck up through their proboscis. I always thought proboscis was a pretty cool word and hoped one day I'd find the occassion to use it. My dream has become a reality.

I'm not sure the fly would understand it this way but the string could even be seen as an act of loving concern, as it would keep the fly from bashing its brains out on the nearest window. |

Was the fly's name, Billy? |

My brother's friend did this with a bee last year. I was going to post the method, but (thankfully) followed the appropriate search protocols. |
