Personalized transgenic bacon

Well, what else are we going to do with the leftover bits of all those organ-transplant pigs?

So, that's one heart-lung transplant, and forty pounds of cured ham, to go, correct? That'll be $386,000. Pull up to the next window please.

Liver bypass with pigs http://content.nejm...tent/full/331/4/234
I am not sure what became of the pigs afterwards. Someone could email an author and find out. [bungston, Mar 17 2010]

Hi everyone, nice to meet you. Honeydew, this is quite possibly the grossest thing I've every considered. Thank you! Furthermore, if you were to, say, receive a heart from a pig and then were to eat bacon from said pig. Would that constitute some form of cannibalism, since the pigs flesh would be provided nutritive sustenance for another part of the pig? Like a cosmically funny kind of auto-cannibalism (or self-cannibalism, if you prefer)?

If you don't cook it properly you gradually morph into the pig.

Somehow I read that as transgendered...
RayfordSteele, Mar 17 2010

[RayfordSteele], that would not produce bacon, but sausuge.
pocmloc, Mar 17 2010

The meat would be of the highest quality, I'm sure ... given the extremely hygienic conditions in which animals, raised for medical use are kept.

I wonder ... If a pig were raised in a sterile environment, then would said pig be kosher?

       Hello and welcome [BakedRiemannZeta].

[MP], you're not supposed to be nice to newbies. It spoils the hazing.

Make him drop his trousers, and then rub boot blacking all over his backside.

Auto cannibalism, that's what I thought this would be. Take a bit of your own flesh and cultivate it in a lab, [Zeno] steak mmmmmmm
zeno, Mar 18 2010

Why cultivate it in a lab? Lift skin flap, remove steak, cook, eat, apply sticking plaster. mmm...
pocmloc, Mar 18 2010

Certainly a new take on the Atkins diet; "Eat Yourself Thin", literally !

[bungston]: concerning your [link] - about 15 years ago I wrote a short story about bypass pigs. The pigs were used whole, alive and conscious, rather than piecemeal, and the tale was told from the pig's point of view. I'm somewhat disturbed that this is approaching bakeage.

[BakedRiemannZeta] and [zeno]: a morally acceptable* form of auto-cannibalism is the goal. Cultivating your own vatmeat was the initial idea, but I'm sure that must have been posted before. Besides, transgenic organ harvest pigs are on the boundary between lab and market as we speak.

       Suggested brand name: "Long Pig"

       *except to vegetarians, of course.

Start by chewing your fingernails, and work up from there ?

Well, I do eat my own scabs, so that's a start.

If this was quoted because it came from another idea/set of annos, then you will remember what [MaxwellBuchanan] said to this question: Paramedics and Life Guards, for starters.
