It's well known that artificial gravity created by spinning in too small a radius results in disorientation, as the inner ear tells a person they are moving sideways. This has resulted in a lot of focus on longer, bigger, or wider vehicles to spin for artificial gravity.

Except that isn't known; not really. This village would consist of round houses designed to spin fast enough for the occupant to start to get disoriented. Everything in it would be designed to allow soft falls. (foam floors, beanbag furniture, inflated rubber tub, etc) The floors would be tilted outward and yes this would result in higher than 1g at the floor, decreasing to the center. It could be built in a cone shape such that multiple floors all are straight "down". So the inner floors would need to be much flatter than the outer floors. Probably only two floors to get the right diameter.

People would live in this village for extended periods of time to see if some or all of them can get used to the Coriolis effect. We could also learn how long it takes to transition from spin to flat gravity.

How do the inhabitants get in and out of their dwellings without serious injury ?

[8th of 7] is that really you, asking about the safety of an idea?
Anyway, it's easy: have access from the top centre, so you can drop into the (not very fast) axis (perhaps have a small "pre-spin" transition area that can spin up after you step in).

It's really us. We're asking because if there's a chance of serious or even fatal injuries just through day-to-day activities, we will award a bun.

The idea of an axial "spin-up" transition area to avoid the problem is rather disappointing. Practical, but still disappointing.

Actually I was thinking of a wide bouncy surface around each house.

       + I like it....

There used to be a song “ Necessary spinning in the front yard” I have always liked the idea of necessary spinning.

And here's me thinking this could have been rotational function to move heaven and earth in a regular balanced way with all the other cycles. Sun, moon, traffic, seasons.

Is there a reason that houses are not built on spindles mounted parallel to the axis of rotation of the Earth, and mechanised to rotate once every 24 hours?

Anyone fancy a game of parabolic pool?

Maybe, but where are you going to put the parabolae? For example, if the table top is concave, then all the balls will huddle uninterestingly in the middle, if it is convex, they will hug the edges, and if you mean the table top to follow the curvature which the house is using to make gravity, then I would expect the curve to be an arc of a circle, and not parabolic.

// if the table top is concave, then all the balls will huddle uninterestingly in the middle//

But... if the room is constantly spinning at the right speed then the balls will behave as though they are on a flat table.

[pocmloc] Ideally the house would be mounted on gimbals and rotate in several axes at once, so as to maintain a constant orientation with respect to the rest of the galaxy

//the balls will behave as though they are on a flat table.//

I think that would require curvature based on circles, not parabolae, but I admit I haven't tried it.

In my village we call this "The Pub". There is the occasional roundhouse observed as well.

If I scoop any more of these 12 foot satellite dishes I had thought to maybe try making one, but building a rotating gazebo might be beyond my capabilities...

       ...yet.

Re. linked idea, OK, you got me. My brain has retired hurt.
pertinax, Feb 09 2021

       Right?!

I wanna make one. With a 12 ft. diameter dish I could make not just an 8-ball table, but a parabolic snooker table... like for reals.

"You sirs! Refined gentlemen y'are. Step right up. Give'r a spin! Only $10.00 per round.
