What the ***k is this sign, man? Can I park here or not? Do I have to feed the meter?
Wait
a minute! I have my instant parking sign barcode decoder! I just point it at the barcode on the sign, and beeeep!
"Legal parking until 4:00 (2h 37m)"
"Meter cost = $2.25"
Done and done. Pulling in.

Far simpler, and cheaper for all concerned would be a 'graphical' representation of allowed parking, ie like a school timetable - with SUN-MON accross the top, and hours of the day running down the left.
The allowed times would be marked in, say blue for parking allowed, green for standing allowed, red for trucks etc...
In an instant you could determine if you were allowed to park or not. |

[fogfreak] is likely right. But just in case Mayor Daley is
lurking, I suggest making the meter pole automatically
scan the license plate/sticker of the vehicle in question,
then light a little red X (move on) or green checkmark
(home sweet home) to tell you the verdict before you
even have a foot out the door. |

I have seen new meters that have an LCD display. They could just show: $5.00/hour, $15.50 to end of day, trucks welcome. No bar code needed. How would your bar code reader know the schedule? Barcode is usually just an ID. The detailed information has to be downloaded from somewhere else. |
