Make an arcade game into an exhilarating ride.

Take a small, yellow, cylindrical, quick, electric car that is maneuvered with a steering wheel and accelerator pedal or with four arrow keys, and that can turn on its own axis. At the front are two, large jaws that can devour soft articles and pack them inside.

Add maze wall units that can be raised from the flush with the floor to build low mazes of varying difficulty. Some of the walls can emit “pellets” of foam the size of volleyballs that settle in dimples in the floor.

Include four, enemy, ghost, robot cars, Pinky, Blinky, Inky and Clyde, that patrol the maze in programmed or random patterns. Their ground clearance allows them to roll over the pellets without disturbing them.

Enhance with arcade sounds and lighting, and let hilarity and pandemonium ensue as the driver, amid cheers and laughter, tries to navigate the maze, locating and consuming all the pellets without being bumped by a ghost car.

Futurama 4th year, ep. #3: Anthology of Interest II http://www.gotfutur...ide/Season4/#S04E03
They did a humorous take on this last year. The scene where the space invaders attack (with Mr. PacMan leading the Earth defense forces) was hilarious. [krelnik, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 21 2004]

another neat idea from the Time Lord +1

Given the mechnical difficulties of working jaws, how about using large balloons, and letting the car pop them? And the ghosts could be moving patches of dead electricity, so your car dies if they reach you.

some sort of vacuum suction might work.

The balloons are an improvement, but I think some sort of jaws are a must for Pac-Man authenticity.

Sadly would not be as fun as it first sounds (ducks for cover - down?). Much of the excitement in Pac Man comes from the sense of suspense, in order to get the suspense you need a map to keep track of all the things that are supposed to induce the suspense - the number of pills remaining, the position and behaviour of the ghosts.

I think what I am saying is - cool idea, but do not forget the map!

Well, I was thinking low enough walls so that the driver and others can see all the ghosts and the pellets/balloons/pills.

This is inspiring... real Minesweeper (maybe just with a mild ZZAP!)... real Tetris, with meter-high foam blocks (good & sweaty workout, carrying all those blocks around)...

Or perhaps Spy Hunter with modified bumper cars. Hmmm...
Pharaoh Mobius, Dec 09 2002

Space invaders ..... huge balloons filled with custard dropping down, and a 12-gauge to blast them with .... brilliant.......

Pong... Quake... oops, those already exist

I just envisioned Q*bert done up in this fashion: a huge ziggaraut, with each square set up with lights and a sensor that triggers the lights when in proximity to a low-yield transmitter carried by the player. The player has to light all the panels while avoiding the park employees dressed in snake (and the other Q*bert baddies) costumes. Nice aerobic workout, and fun to boot.

       Q*bert?
