I saw a comic that referred to "origami boulders", the idea
that you crumple a piece of paper into a ball and call it a
boulder made me laugh.
When I was done laughing, I thought it would be interesting
to
see how close you could come to making a perfect sphere
with
a single piece of
paper. Then I wrote the idea here.
The competition would consist of multiple participants with
a
single piece of paper. The bell would ring and all would start
making their sphere. Person who finished first with the
most
perfect sphere wins.
Why a sphere and not some other thing? The more work you
put into a sphere the cleaner the lines. You could make a
clunky boxy piece of crap in a minute or two but you'd loose
on quality. Watching somebody turn a flat plane into a
perfect
sphere by whatever method would be very interesting to
watch.
Gotta be honest, not one of my better ideas.

When I was a kid, we used a regular piece of A4 - apply folds then blow in one end and it would pop out into a 2œ" spher(ish). |
|
|
I've done those too, but that wouldn't cut it in this
competition. I'm picturing masterpieces of geometric genius
stunning and amazing the audience. |
|
|
How big that audience might be is open to speculation. |

Take a sphere-shaped mold (of just the right size) and crush the piece of paper into a perfect solid sphere (perhaps add water to maintain deformity). |
|
|
Hmm. Probably should specify rules like "No sphere
shaped molds". |
|
|
1- No sphere shaped molds.
2- Sexual harassment of the judges while not
encouraged is not strictly prohibited.
3- Those caught bribing the judges will be
disqualified so don't get caught bribing the judges
if you catch our drift.
4- None of "those people" will be allowed to
participate (you know who you are)
5- Drug testing will be in effect and a urine sample
may be requested at any time during the
competition.
6- The judges reserve the right to consider the
attractiveness of the participants when rendering
their decision. |

Would we be required to fold the paper or could we just
curl it? Are scissors allowed? |
