The question has been asked here before, 'Why can't I create a view that allows me to see a list of halfbakery users?'
Why in <deity>'s name anyone would actually want to do this is beyond me - but, apparently some do. Remember it's all about the ideas guys.
Anyway, in order to facilitate this,
I propose an opt-in scheme whereby a user chooses to insert an arbitrarily unique string of text into their profile, a string of text that is unlikely to appear anywhere else on the bakery or the internet, that will allow the inquisitive user to successfully perform a search that only returns user profiles.
The text? I went for:
Ooolongftangftangbank
As in
'Participating member of the Ooolongftangftangbank profile scheme.'
Simply copy and paste into your profile.

Non-opt-in list
http://www.google.c...lfbakery.com%2Fuser 38,000 entries, though not in alphanumeric order, and none that have been added since the Googlebot last cruised through. [DrCurry, Sep 06 2005]
refined non-opt-in-list
http://www.google.c...fied%22&btnG=Search Down to around 900 users, only those who have modified their account since the crash, and removed the crash text. [zen_tom, Sep 06 2005]
For wagster

Refined Baker List
http://www.halfbake...3At=Recent_20Bakers A list of bakers who have posted a survivng idea in the past two months. [hidden truths, Sep 06 2005]

By which I mean to say that I am opposed to opt-in anything. If you can do it with "Ooolongftangftangbank," why can't you simply use the text that already appears on every account page to compile a full list of users? |
Because there isn't any uniform text that is on every profile. Before posting this idea, I tried using 'last modified' but it doesn't work, plus it's plastered all over the bakery in other places. |
You could try, 'This account was destroyed in a disk crash...' or something similar, but if anything, this will provide you with a list of less active bakers (which may be a good thing) rather than more active ones. |
See link, doubting Tom. Though given that Google will only return a thousand results, you'll need another way to get them all. |
Ahh yes, good idea DrC - Google may be the way forward for the true Halfbakery obsessive - opt-in is of course a pain in the neck, but it allows the existing system to perform jobs it wasn't previously able to do. |
Of course it's open to abuse (as per egnor-yuck-boringisms) but, society operates this way without too many issues. |
I would simply propose adding "/user" or somesuch as a Halfbakery search option to only search user pages. Although I hesitate to add more work for the Webmistress, so in reality, I woudln't. |
Quick question - somewhere here someone has posted instructions for creating a view that is accessible to everyone and can be posted as a link but I can't find them. Anyone know where they are or how to do it? |
Create the view, then edit it, then click "Okay." The full description of the view remains in the link, so you can post it as a link for someone else to use. |
You have to clear the name of the view, then click OK. |
Isnt' the premise of this idea incorrect, as DrCurry's latest link demonstrates? |
[krelnik] I think you're probably right. I am temped to delete this, and will do soon unless I hear any calls for its retention on grounds of helpful information providence [edit:Or if I just don't feel like it]. |
OK I think that I may as well throw in my chip to this. See link. |
Interestingly, (for some) if you edit the view posted by [DrC] by changing 'sort by author' to 'sort by votes' you get a total for each category of croissant/fishbone level. |
There are 373 cCC ideas and 136 fFF ideas. The neutral vote is the most frequent category (as expected, not least because of the loss of votes to many ideas during the great crash of Oct'04). |
[Jinbish] - Oddly enough, if you add up all the questions returned under the view you describe, you find out that there are 25672 ideas here at the current time, which is a lot less than there should be. |
[EDIT] - No, that's about right in fact, probably exactly correct. |
I wonder how large the halfbakery really is. (in megabytes? gigabytes?) |
..........Bakery
....1U = -------
............2
? |
Hardware humor ! (see link) |
There are still only 18 people on this scheme. |
I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member. |
Thanks [jutta] - how come none of us thought of that before? |
[21Q] I just counted, and from [-----] to [zyada], I count 5457. |
[nuclear_hobo], you're barred! |
// how come none of us thought of that before?
It's possible someone did and I flamed them behind the scenes for stressing halfbakery server resources. |
By DrCurry's Google reckoning, the total number of users is down by 2/3. Halfbaking is the only probiotic which eats itself. |
Well, I see one old alias on there, so it`s whatever the
total is, minus 1. |
Seeing my name on that list, I now know how an insect
feels when the stone they are hiding under is raised. |
Anyway, why not just ask the NSA/GCHQ? |
