It seems obvious, we do this for left and right hand turns, carpool lanes, etc.
But I have yet to see a city which paints arrows for the direction of traffic on a one-way street.
It doesn't have to cover the entire street, just the intersection of the streets.
How many times have you found yourself
looking for the post where the "one way" arrow is pointing, when it would be clearly obvious if the arrows were painted on the street.
When you went to make your turn, you would seen an army of arrows pointing at you, and would (hopefully) think "this can't be good" and turn around.
From the minutes of an Ashland, OR Traffic Safety Commission meeting:

I only support this if you do it in graffiti style |

//Signs last longer// Signs on posts get run over and the posts tend to rust. Painted signs can be pretty sturdy. |

Downtown L.A. has multiple painted arrows on one-way streets. |
|
|
There are some of these in our downtown area. Not ubiquitous so I suspect they were a countermeasure to a few persistent problems. |

Also appears to be baked in Ashland, OR, USA (link) |

<looks out of window>
Yup, baked on my street and many many others in the UK. Still doesn't stop idiots driving the wrong way. |
|
|
There are heaps of arrows on the roads in my city. |

Completely otiose and unbakeable in Napoli, where driving is truly an existentialist artform. The "Senso Unico" one-way arrow sign seen at a T-junction indicates only the probable directional preponderance of traffic at any time, rather than any concrete commandment. In rush hours, these signs should really be automatically switched in orientation, like tidal flowmeters, to accomodate the inevitable reverse flow. It would be hard to adjust painted arrows on the road to suit this. |
|
|
Of course "Senso Unico" might also refer to the single thought you as a visitor might have in that city - to hie thee therefrom to the airport. In the train. |

One way streets and I= Threat to western civilization. I cannot stand one way streets i always go the wrong way and it is very scary, i wish we could rid them all together, until this genious yet simple idea was created now we can all live in safety and less fear of me! |
