No Steering Column

Steering wheel without a column

Why do some cars still have steering columns? It seems that people are always ending up with one of these embedded into their chest in an accident? They should be outlawed even if the car has an air bag. I'd like to see the spokes on a steering wheel go straight to the console and if you get into an accident the spokes compress like the hydralic lift on a hatchback to help absorb some of the impact of your accident just in case the bag doesn't deploy.

Wait, so what's the idea? I'm a little confused. I think people will get hung up on the word "outlawed."

Why, indeed, have a steering wheel at all? These obsolete relics should be replaced with the kind of compact controls found on video games.

DrCurry: The only advantage to a steering wheel is so I can rest my tired body across the wheel at stop lights. LOL! I'd much prefer a joystick as long as I can keep the kids from bumping it! OOOoops, sorry semi!

*All* modern steering columns are collapsible by design. At least the ones I've ever seen. Govt. rules in most everyplace.

Drive by joystick? No no no no no no NO! too tiring for a long trip to readjust, always biased towards one hand, too easily bumped, too sensitive, not well-suited for certain handicaps...

Howsabout an old-fashioned flight stick rudder?
