It looks far more similar to the WIFI icon on Android smartphones than the NFC icon. I looked it up, out of curiosity, and on iPhones it does just look like they turned the WiFi icon on its side. But why would THAT icon be used to represent a contact payment? It's... kinda the opposite of WiFi really. |

I use the tap to pay feature on my phone quite a bit too, so I'm well acquainted with the icon. It just seems odd to me to have what is very clearly a broadcasting symbol for a contact payment system. |

Right, I get that. That's why it works through a case and the phone's backing when using Apple Pay or Google Wallet. NFC means "Near Field Communiication", which contrasts sharply with WiFi's much longer range. They should at least make it with FEWER arcs than the WiFi symbol to indicate the significantly reduced range. Turning the WiFi symbol sideways indicates neither reduced range nor physical contact. It's a stupid symbol for what it is. |
