Now, instead of just hearing music in the comfort of your living room or car, you can experience all the imagery that accompanies various scents. Given that certain olfactory hues can have bizarre effects on the minds-eye and memory recollection, an artist could add another dimension of interaction
by adding smells, along with music, to distributable media. Of course when it comes to music beauty is in the eye of the listener, or smeller - wafting scents of a summer garden in the rain may be pleasing to some, while others are horrified to recall the childhood incident involving a pack of wild badgers, an evil clown, and a rainy garden.
Certainly there are songs that you would definately not want to smell, like "smells like teen spirit" by nirvana or "i like big butts" by sir-mix-alot, to name a few.
This could be accomplished by adding a scent-maker to a stereo system, and encoding a CD to mix and release certain scents. This is currently being developed for web media and internet marketing purposes, although the web medium is quite different in design and purpose than that of music. Check out the link.

This was baked in the form of a scent-issuing phonograph decades back. I'll try to find a link. |
