Inspired by [scratchpost]'s problem.
Distribute newspapers as rolls, like the scrolls in the old days. Different from scrolls they have perforations between the pages. Readers who prefer fighting with flat sheets can tear the newspaper apart at the perforations to make a neat stack. The rest of just scrolls and reads, column by column. After reading the scroll it put into a dispenser where sheets can be torn off like paper towels. For hygienic reasons the restroom copy would stay in the restroom for clean up purposes.

I'm envisioning a scrolling device made up of scroll-holding brackets and a stepped motor. Press the "next page button" and it spins both sides of the scroll quickly.

I don't like the perforation part of this - you're just asking for a mess and it's no longer scrollable. If people like the old fashoned kind they can buy them that way.

In the end this would be a less expensive and more compact newspaper packaging. Of course it'll only be a matter of time before they add advertisement inserts that drop out as you scroll.
