It's as much a hovercraft as a pancake is a waffle.

The off road bike that does not damage the delicate forest trails. A special 'soil tank' is mounted on the top tube of the bike, which has a conveyor belt dispensing the soil out to in front of the front wheel. The bike runs over this special soil which is then vacuumed up at the rear and deposited back into the tank. The whole process is powered of the bike wheels so doesn't pollute as well.

Similar mechanism. [Monkfish, Nov 30 2000, last modified Oct 04 2004]

Still not very friendly; likely to spread alien species, and not likely to stop compression of the underlying soil.

Possibly better than the original, but only dubiously better than boots.

It is not the bike but the rider who does the damage to the trails. Poor braking skills and other bike handling skills are the main culprit.

If the tire had tread that was in the pattern of footprints, then the blame would be on hikers not bikers.

Oooh! I want horse hoofprints on my mountainbike tires.

"Ah reckon that mount didn't make it too far - lookit how it was only walkin' with it's left hooves"
