Just playing around with some of the core tennets of that great film masterpiece Karate Kid, i.e. by practicing painting fences and waxing cars incessantly until you build up muscle memory or instinct for blocking etc. in martial arts

Do the principles work in reverse and can they be applied to other areas.

1. By practicing martial arts incessantly, does that make you into a world class fence painter and car waxer.

2. Can you learn tennis by opening and closing door with one hand

3. Can you learn cricket, golf by using a sweeping brush or cycling by climbing upstairs?

This was the genius of Mr Miyagi .. the problem was that he thought too small.

I'm betting that Jackie Chan could paint a fence faster than I could...but I'd use less paint and there would be none on the car...or the bad guys.

Crane technique. If do right, no can problem change lightbulb!

But isn't that the whole point of martial arts? I thought these things were supposed to improve your approach to life and everything you do, rather than actually teach you how to beat up bad guys.
wagster, Mar 23 2007

Yes - but that is inherent in the discipline and focus one applies when learning these arts, as opposed to duplicating the movements of painting a fence.

Isn't this the inspiration behind the idea .. how many Danielsan's were before Danielsan before Miyagi picked on painting and waxing. Are painting and waxing the only ones .. has anyone ever tried learning martial arts this way ??
