We all know that Perseus managed to avoid being turned to stone by Medusa by approaching her backwards and only seeing her reflection in his shield. But really, who carries around a polished shield these days? Instead, we attach a small periscope--say, two inches or so--to each eyepiece of a pair of goggles. That way, you can look straight at Medusa while only seeing her reflection, and thereby dodge her deadly gaze. This frees up both hands to do your slaying with, and as an added bonus it will also protect you from basilisks, cockatrices, and any other creatures that can turn you to stone just by looking at you.

Annotation:

/just by looking at you/ - not sure how this idea will protect you against them looking at you, as this concept depends on YOU not looking at THEM (not sure of the precise mechanics of legendary monster statue construction)

Note - no statues have ever been found of someone wearing these googles; thus they are proved to work!

Great idea - very suitable as an add-on option to the invalualble Undead Home Protection Kit (another great product from BorgCo).

I think that these creatures turn you to stone when your gaze meets theirs. I'm not sure that just looking at their backs or sides or whatever will do the trick, nor (as Perseus showed) will having them look at your back--but staring right into their eyes definitely will. At any rate, it's generally accepted that looking at a /reflection/ of the creature isn't sufficient, so whether it's them looking at you or you looking at them that does it, you're covered.

Sounds like the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal to us. <link> So you don't need all this complex optical kit - just a towel......

(+) I developed blind fighting capabilities for a character I had when I played D&D eons ago, so of course once I had killed the Medusa I carried her head around in a sack and would turn large portions of armies to stone until it rotted.

This is ace. Wish I'd thunk of it. [+]

Yeah yeah, that's great for Medusas (indeed, Gorgons in general), but what about Vampires? They've got rights too you know - having people accidentally walking into them all the time just isn't fair, and might land you, the manufacturer, with a class action suit.

While you will have tested this on Gorgons, I think it might be worth carrying out some experiments to check that the petrification thing is mitigated under Cockatrice conditions. Basilisks (another creature with a deadly gaze) can be countered with the "odour of a weasel" which might be something to think about.
