Nests of tables are generally limited to three or four.

This seems a needless limitation to the concept.

BorgCo Matryoshka Tables take nested tables to their logical limit. The outermost table is a normal full-size coffee table. The smallest table is just about big enough to balance a shot glass on. In between there are numerous tables including those suitable for a single cupcake, a single standard coffee mug, just one dinner plate, and a netbook.

Never be caught out with the wrong size of table again ! Order now !

Annotation:

There needs to be a physical equivalent to the Excel pivot table.

The internal tables would be shorter than the external. The smallest must be very short. Your pug could walk up and drink all the butterscotch schnapps from your shot glass. Or is that the intention?

You will already know the answer to that if you've ever seen a drunken pug.

[+] Assumed, of course, is that the end result is a solid looking chunk of wood (no gaps).

Fair point ... yes, certainly, it must appear homogeneous.

But only from one, or possibly two sides. The other sides will have a pyramidal depression in them... I suppose that could still be considered a solid chunk of wood, but really it ought to come with an additional progression of oblong tables to fill the edges in so the condensed form is a perfect cube.

If every nested table but the smallest had flush-fitting lids they would always appear to be solid chunks. The innermost tables, being shorter, could be designed to stand on end, thus keeping your schnapps at hand and out of the dog's reach. [+]

Not if the tabletop were conceptual, rather than physical.
