Why not have the scratch strip on the top instead of on the sides?
In todays matchboxes, its a simple question of printing. The strip is part of the paper glued onto the box's exterior.
That way you could pick up the box, from the sides, with wet hands, without ruining the strip.
Detachable match strike

[Suggests pashute tries picking up the box from the tray sides, not the striking strip sides, when his/her hands are wet.] |
I pick the box up from the ends, or with dry hands. |
Also, with an extra grippy surface the size of the boxes top, it would be difficult to slip a box of matches into your pocket (depending of course on the size of your pockets) |
When you put the box of matches down, just put the box on it's side and get the top and bottom all wet. |
The sides where the strips are now are the strongest, the top as it is now is not strong enough. |

Why use matches at all...I use the long necked Bic...and besides, who the heck goes from task to task in the kitchen with wet hands...get a towel. Dripping all over the stove, counter top and floor creates a rather ugly mess and a dangerous slippery conditions. |

Maybe,[pashute]'s on a riverbank trying to light a camp fire whilst stroking fish? |

OK those are good questions. (Starting Feb 27 I started using the towel in our kitchen). But why would you be <against> the idea? |

because the long side is the same side that the "drawer" is open to.... <spark><foom> |
