There is a town in Washington state called Yakima. Mis-pronouncing this word is apparently a local form of entertainment. The correct pronunciation is YAK-eh-maw. Not yak-EE-muh, or any of the other weird variations people come up with.
I recently became aware that the map software "Waze" is pronouncing
the word as YICKY-muh. This cannot stand!
I propose an add-on app that will replace any of the offending words or names with less aggravating choices.
So, when the word Yakima comes up, it will be instantly and seamlessly replaced with the more accurate "Hell-On-Earth" or "The-Poster-Child-For-Urban-Decay" or even "YAK-eh-maw."

What are people called who live there? Yakkers? |
Nobody "lives" there. It's not living, it's just "dragging out a miserable existence in a state of dejection and hopelessness, praying that death will come soon". |
Don't go to Spokane - compared to there, Yakima's the Pacific Riviera. Or you could try Omak, a place so dull that old people go there to practice for being dead. |
If you go to the top of Mount Hood, on a clear day you can see everything of interest in the state of Washington. If you go to the bottom of Mount Hood, at night, and put your head in a burlap sack containing a dead raccoon, you can still see everything of interest in the state of Washington. |

// Mis-pronouncing this word is apparently a local form of entertainment. // |
Mis-pronouncing this word is actually the only local form of entertainment, apart from tree-racing, and watching Deliverance on VHS, making notes, and hoping some strangers happen by. |
But don't let our prejudice put you off - maybe spending your days trying to communicate the basic tenets of civilization to a bunch of slack-jawed dolts in dungarees and straw hats is your "thing" ... |

Dead raccoons are few and far between, [8th]. It
would be much easier to fill the burlap bag with any
of the fine selection of feral cats available here.
Once one no longer requires said bag, one can easily
recycle the bag into one of the many rivers swiftly
flowing through the area... |
You get over to this side of the pond, 8thy? |
Now and again. Some parts are nicer than others, and the season can make a huge difference. Miami in December is quite pleasant; in August, it's vile. Then again, Bayonne is bloody awful whenever you go. |
Raccoons are notably intelligent - rather more so than the proto-hominids that infest the so-called "urban" areas, i.e. two caves in the same local area. That's probably why they've all left. |
The many swiftly-flowing rivers are of course the inevitable consequence of the almost incessant rain. |
The only real hope is that the Cascadia fault will rupture, submerging the entire wretched region beneath the Pacific. |
A mere volcanic eruption - Hood, Baker, or any of the others - wouldn't quite be enough, as the locals would just eat the ashfall. |
They do grow some rather deliciously flavored hops in
Yakima - I'd always pronounced it as ya-keeee-mah btw
- but based on this sample size of one, I might
continue doing so, with additional creeping suspicion
that I'm saying it wrong, so thanks for that. |

Would be kind of handy for "Llanfairpwllgwyn gyllgogerych wyrndrob wllllantysilio gogogoch." NB it is all one word, but 1/2b doesn't allow words this long without spaces. |
Not to mention "Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit"... |

Who's he when he's at home ? "Jim" ? |

// "Llanfairpwllgwyn gyllgogerych wyrndrob wllllantysilio gogogoch." // |

We went there once. It was shut. And it was cold, windy, and raining. Nothing but a bleak expanse of soggy heathland, and a dozen sheep looking round in a funny way. Fortunately there's an RAF base not far away, so maybe one day they'll manage a bit of environmental improvement, by using the place as a bombing range. |

//Who's he...// second one's in thailand. |

I was thinking about something like this just the other day. The voice
of Google read out "Aberdare" as a-ber-DAA-re, as if she were about to
conjugate it like amo. |
It made me wonder what the basic pronunciation algorithm did,
assuming it had a lookup table of exceptions for really awkward
words, and assuming Aberdare (nor Yakima) were not in that table. |
I have a hunch, but my physio helps with that. |
