Manufacturing Methods Tariff

A new solution to outsourcing.

The US and other 1st world countries have an issue with their corporations going to 3rd world countries and milking their cheap labor. (I am going to stick to the US to make it simple)

I propose that all products imported to the US will have to comply with US labor laws, EPA standards, OSHA, etc if they want to bypass a tariff.

The tariff can then be incrementally raised till it just becomes a flat out law: "no imports without meeting standards."

Less outsourcing issues, less screwing poor people issues, less pollution in china, etc.

With the collapse of the Chinese export market, millions of poor Chinese will be out of work, thinking wistfully of those underpaid, sub-OSHA jobs they used to have.

This idea brilliantly solves that problem, by creating millions of new jobs as factory inspectors, enforcing American labor and environmental laws in Chinese factories.

The only remaining loose end is how to pay these inspectors. Perhaps the Chinese government could divvy up it's US Federal bond holdings, and pay the inspectors with shares of that?

Knock-on effects on the rest of the world economy are left as an exercise for the reader.

Hmmm, I think we had this dialogue in the UK circa 1978. Admittedly, we opted for banking instead, so try and avoid that one. Also try avoiding farming and tourism. Welcome to free trade.

Yeah, that'll happen just after they start protecting patents...
