Make Your Own Consumer electronic Product

By modularizing components of Home electronics Products.

This will be a LEGO for home electronics;

e.g. a Home theater system can modularized into

A> CD/DVD drive (can be made into disk-man) B> pre-amplifier C> Amplifier with speakers.

A TV system can modularized into:

D> display Unit E> audio amplifier with speakers.

A Disk-man can be modularized into: F> CD/DVD drive

Now, if analyse this C and E are complementary to each other. Hence we can get rid of E. A TV can be forced to utilize C so that it can be made cheaper and have much better performance. A TV will now contain only display;hence far fewer things to go wrong. This display can be shared by computer, oscilloscope, telescope, microscopes etc,

You get the idea..This list can be extended to include many other products.

       //so that it can be made cheaper// I think I can see the flaw in this idea.

       Again, you are talking about things that already exist - there are already plenty of 'dumb' monitors that don't care from what appliance their signal comes. [marked-for-deletion] widely known to exist.
zen_tom, Dec 07 2010

       Currently this kind of modularity does not exist.

       For example, you cant take away CD drive from a home theater and use it as a diskman. Or one can't take away preamplifier from an amplifier and use it somewhere else. Or probably take out graphic equalizer away from home theater.

       This idea has come and gone, I guess it could come again a la crystal radios, Heathkit and Radio Shack.

       You could if you knew what you were doing...

       Sony used to make a toslink optical cable built into a 1/8" trs audio connector. It was an option for the DAT Walkman.

       Many problems can be solved by standardizing input and output characteristics of each block. Availability problem of connectors can be thus solved partly.

       e.g. standardize preamp o/p so that it works with any compatible power amp.

       Put each block in nice box with proper labelling and provide proper ports on each box so that laymen can understand how to connect boxes with each other.

       Thus, for a sound portion of a TV, home theater can be used. For Tuner portion, a separate tuner box (already available in market) can be used. A TV can simply take A/V in as input for example.

       //You don’t actually remember the ’70s, then?//

       You mean those early radio sets which used to come in 4-5 boxes ; one for every stage of radio ?
VJW, Dec 08 2010

       Or those 'modular' audio component systems - you know, the ones that are exactly like you are describing in the idea. I think some people called them 'stack' systems, because you had to stack all of the different pieces on top of one another. You'd buy an amplifier, a pre-amp, a tape-deck (cassette or reel-to-reel), a record player, a radio tuner, speakers - all as separate units and have to wire them all together with the appropriate cables. I didn't realise these didn't exist anymore?
zen_tom, Dec 09 2010

       They do still exist, see link. But don't look at the price list!
pocmloc, Dec 09 2010

       Seriously? People don't know these exist?
