I can call spirits from the vasty deep.
HOTSPUR
Why, so can I, or so can any man;
But will they come when you do call for them?
... Anyway, it's nine years since I last tried calling 'bakers from the vasty deep (or the Home Counties, anyway). It was good last time,
and I will try again.
I shall be in London for the first two weeks of July, except for the weekend in the middle, and any days that get filled up with other commitments as I go along.
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, umm... Friday 14th?
Supper from 7:00, pub from 8:00, like last time? Exactly which supper and pub to be decided, but central London somewhere.

Arse. I shall be out of the country on that date. |
I've never been to one so I'm in. I'll wear the recognition hat. |
Half a loaf, half a loaf, half a loaf onward rode the six bakers. |
Tell me more about these spirits. |
Mine will be good. Hope yours will be too. |
//Arse. I shall be out of the country// |
So shall I: I shall have gone to England. |
9 years!? Crikey, time flies when you're...ah rats. |
I look forward to a triad of supping, pubbing, and spiriting, and what's more, believe I will be located within the bounds of the appropriate country at the aforementioned time. |
agendum addendum: to pledge the health of [blissmiss], and other absent friends. |
//I shall have gone to England//
sp.: "they
would have been going to England" |
Absolutely. My flight leaves early on Friday. With a little luck, I shall be on it. Only such details as time, place and means of recognition remain to be resolved. |
Just wear a croissant or a rotting fish carcass in
your buttonhole, or ... (see link) |
One thing we didn't manage to bring about last time around was skypery for absent friends. Would there be any takers for that this time around? |
Let's say we do the same venues as last time, because I've run out of time to have original ideas in this connection. So, the upstairs bistro of the Bleeding Heart restaurant, followed later on by Ye Olde Mitre. |
Can I get an idea of numbers for booking a table? |

I have for a while had the idea of making some croissant
lapel pins, but I have yet to get around to learning
cloisonné and enameling. Actually, CNC milled or 3D
printed cloisonné could be interesting. (There are
companies that will make custom lapel pins, but where's
the fun in that?) |
I'm in - my first time - it'll be good to meet up. |
OK: I've set up a skype account called kippers and croissants.
Anyone thinking of skyping in can make contact with that. |
Yay, now all we need is a date, time, and a translator. |
Well, the date is Friday 14th, and the time (for skyping) is
sometime a little after 7:00pm British Summer Time (to give
people time to get comfortable). That's GMT +1. So, for
example, 4:00am on Saturday if you're in Queensland, or (I think)
2pm on Friday if you're in Vermont, or 11:00am if you're in
California, or something. (Could be wrong about some of those
places - haven't checked for daylight saving). |
So, I think I'll book a table for four, expecting [zen_tom], [Ian
Tindale] (optimistically), [DenholmRicshaw] and myself, and
expecting a virtual [blissmiss] telepresence by skype. (I'm not
sure whether to read [bigsleep]'s response as a yes or a no,
though of course he would be more than welcome, and mashed
potato could be provided). |
I will book it in the name of Sturton Buchanan, though we won't
try leaving him with the bill. I'm hoping this will allow us to find
each other (viz., by asking for the table in that name). |
[DenholmRicshaw], since you haven't been to one of these things
before, I will only say, don't forget your other shoe when we brief
the Bilderberg Group about the cucumbers. |
If anyone would like to communicate about this outside this page,
then feel free to talk to the "kippers and croissants" skype
account. |
shoes and cucumbers - understood |
Very good, I'll be along for the le shebang-tout, and have neatly pencilled the appropriate spacetime coordinates into my leather-bound personal orrery. I may nudge [Dub] and [TheLeopard] too if they've not already got something on. |
I would also like to join, although probably only for the drinking part. |
I seem to remember that last time, [po] would have liked to join but didn't find out about the arrangements until too late. Perhaps someone should send a message? |
[po] would of course be extremely welcome. I don't think I have
her contact details, but if someone else could get a message to
her, I'd be all for that. |
I believe she can be reached by carrier pigeon only. |
I wish you all an enjoyable evening and shall raise a measure of
Laphroaig at the appointed time. |
Not sure I can make This Frday (14th) :( |
The Bleeding Heart* is on Bleeding Heart lane (Yard?), just West of Farringdon Station, and Ye Olde Mitre is situated a bit South-West from there, down a tiny alleyway that runs between Hatton Garden and Ely Place - if you see the big Glass Sainsburys building (Sainsburys HQ 33 Holborn) then you've gone too far (or not far enough, depending). It's relatively nearby though. |
* Ahh, but is it the Bleeding Heart Bistro, or the Bleeding Heart Restaurant? (The map suggests these are separate venues - from memory, it was the one further around the corner and definitely not the Bleeding Heart Tavern) |
Pigeon dispatched...
[he's walking...]
Pigeon-steps, of course |
And, yes, it's down an alleyway. |
I'm getting all excited. :) |
If zen, dub, ian & denholm are going to be joined by theleopard
and maybe po, we're gonna need a bigger table! |
No-one seems to have contacted "kippers and croissants" on
skype yet, though. |
I wish I could attend.
//we're gonna need a bigger table!// |
We missed you on skype, [bliss]; what happened? Are you OK? |
Wish I could have been there (this annotation added
from a train somewhere in France) |
I never go to these. I'm too busy experimenting with
magnetic milk. |
That animated photo is hilarious |
I'm diluted to see that at least one of the halfbakers represented in the photographs understands the correct and proper use of tobacco as a key element of civilisation. |
It was rather splendid to meet and put names to faces. |
[Ian] I'll update the profile page |
(another) excellent oppotunity to solve some of the World's current problems (even if it didn't know it had them). To the next one. Lovely to meet new/old faces. Here's [ DenholmRicshaw]'s QR code in Morse Code Dash-dash-space dot space dot ... |
No, he was obviously a HB hanger-on who was too shy to announce his moniker (this time)
I'll name him [Nuber] {famed for suggesting an idea of VERY cheap taxi service where all clients must be licensed drivers, and all drivers are provisional-licensed learners who need lots of practise.} |
