Carry it around like a cellphone

Electric pianos are cool. Smaller than a conventional piano, more mobile, programmable with different sounds. But still not that mobile. You have to carry around a huge keyboard.

Instead, use the laser-radar technology to create a virtual piano keyboard. That way you can have a small device with an LCD screen for tinkering with settings and stuff, and an earphone jack to play without bothering other people, also minispeakers (which are pretty powerful nowadays), and it wouldn't be very big. Maybe 2in x 4in x 0.5in (5cm x 10 cm x 1.25cm). Maybe smaller, judging by the size of the laser keyboards they can make.

Carry it around like a cellphone and play the piano anywhere.

No touch. No escapement. No feel. Abomination!

But just imagine! A piano in your pocket! Of course it is no match for a real piano, but what if there isn't any available pianos nearby? :)

Rollup pianos perhaps serve the same purpose (easily carried portable piano.) I'd been watching the prices for a while ($200 for 49keys, $300+ with MIDI)

I just bought a few of these [link] as presents, and to keep around for those occasions where I just want a simple keyboard to plunk out an arrangement.

At $20, how can one not have several?

[bristolz] Agreed. My musical explorations are far removed from piano playing, but as a listener, touch and expression are what piano music is all about. Replace //electric piano// with 'customisable music interface', and I'll want one.

Obligatory "Is that a piano in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?".
