Consider your average smartphone, which is rectangular in shape. Rectangles always have a longer dimension and a shorter dimension. With respect to the long dimension, at one edge of the phone is a speaker, and at the opposite edge is a microphone. You hold the phone near your head so that the microphone-edge is close to your mouth, while the speaker-edge is close to your ear. There is a limit to how long the long dimension of the phone can be, because your head is only so big.

So let's consider a larger phone, anyway. We want the shorter dimension of this smartphone to be the same as the longer dimension of the typical existing smartphone. On the back side of the phone, right in the middle, stretching across the shorter dimension, we mount a handle, like you might put on a cupboard door to pull the door open. On the face-side of the phone, in the middle of one longer edge, we put a speaker, and in the middle of the other longer edge, we put a microphone.

Now you can use the handle to hold this large phone near your head, and since the distance between the microphone and the speaker is "normal" for smartphones, you can use it just fine. But when you pull the phone away from your head, to use it for other purposes, you have a nice large wide-screen!

[8th of 7], I have yet to see any sort of large flat electronic device that has the kind of handle on the back that I described, so it could be held as easily as an ordinary smartphone.

You could use a tablet with a bluetooth headset.

//Rectangles always have a longer dimension and a shorter dimension// - is this true? You could say that a square is just a special case of a rectangle, but is still a rectangle.
hippo, Jun 25 2014

       Technically, it's a regular quadrilateral.

       Steam iron … ?

[Vern], get a folding camera grip handle, and some double sided adhesive tape. And a life …

[Version], type "ipad case with handle on back" into Google and watch autocomplete kill your dreams.

You could always have a small phone, but stand really close to it.

I'm not sure what this obsession is with quadrilaterals - When are we going to see pentagonal electronic devices?

// one edge of the phone is a speaker, and at the opposite edge is a microphone

Some phones have speakers at both "edges".
tatterdemalion, Jun 26 2014

[tatterdemalion], I'm sure that has something to do with stereo, but only one of them is likely to be used when a smartphone is in "phone" mode. This wider device could have 3 speakers, 2 more at opposite ends of the long dimension, and also for stereo. The one in the middle, that I originally described in the main text, would be dedicated only for phone-mode use.

A square phone! Just as I predicted! (see link)

As you say, interesting, but I'm a little doubtful of how it would be in actual usage.

// The next was one of Motorola's early low- end Android phones, the Flipout. //

It's not that low-end; it has a pretty good range of features, and it's very compact. It's also remarkably tough.

       // I don't recal being particularly impressed by either.//

Aside from the disappointing battery life, you clearly didn't look hard enough at the MB511. If you had, you'd realise that its advantages- like a really good keyboard, excellent RF performance, bright clear screen and fast CPU - far outweigh its disadvantages … to the extent that this anno is being written on a Flipout. And we have taken the trouble to aquire a spare, for when this one wears out.
