In F(irst) P(erson) S(hooter) games, you're always forced to shoot straight ahead, requiring you to turn in order to shoot enemies that may approach from the back or sides. FPS games should include a button assignment that would let your character, if carrying two weapons, fire one of gun blindly in
the direction of the nearest threat.
Say you're playing a game, carrying dual pistols. You round a corner and find a swarm of enemies. You're busy trying to deal with this big threat when a lone gunman runs up behind you. You could turn around to take him out, but this would leave your back exposed to the group you were fighting. With a quick press of the assigned button, one of your pistols would disappear from your view, while the computer automatically targets the rough proximity of the new enemy and shoots off 3 rounds. After this, the gun returns to your view, and you can once again use it to fight off the main enemy group. This cover fire would send the lone enemy running for temporary cover (possibly even killing him,) allowing you to focus on the larger group. No muss, no fuss.

I think this'd work better on a 2nd person Max Payne type game. Of course, any in game character capable of using this move must at all times be wearing a white linen suit, dangling a toothpick from his gob and wading through a sea of doves. |

I suspect "Enter the Matrix" has something like this, but not having played it I can't say for sure. I've seen demos of Halo 2 that show that you can pick up different weapons in each hand and fire them both, but I don't know if it lets you point them differently (I would guess no). |

I originally made a pointed comment to that effect; however, shooting in two directions at once *is* realistic (if unlikely to work very well), even if the average Woo film is not. We do have two hands. |

Didn't Tomb Raider have something like this? I seem to remember the two guns (occaisionally) tracking separately. |

Most people use the mouse to control where they are looking, where they are pointing, and if they are shooting. |

The other hand is on "wasd", for going forward/back, and strafing. The thumb is on the spacebar for jumping, and the hand is in a perfect position to "jump up" to the number keys for changing weapons. |

Two joysticks could work, but one of them would need to be "twistable" so you could change direction, and that still would not allow a way to look (and aim) up/down. |

We might be able to incorporate a "foot board" for controling movement, and that way we could free up the hands for aiming alone. |

This would be a nice touch for a first person perspective game based on hand weapons (a good ol hack-and-slash-em up). One sword and a shield or some kind of made double sword action. |

I tried playing Area 51 with both lightguns. I found it totally impossible to usefully use both at the same time. Perhaps a player could use one lightgun and one joystick to aim one weapon and move the player; if this was done, the player could carry a fixed-aimpoint weapon in addition to the lightgun-operated one. |

I've seen a system for locking on multiple enemies with multiple guns at once in various games, e.g. in Heavy Metal FAKK 2 or in MDK 2 (when you play with the 6-legged dog; can't recall his name). |

About the realism of shoting two guns: |

I tried using two guns once on the shooting range. We were three people, who in turn emptied two Glocks simultaneously at a full figure target approximately 20 meters (65 feet) away. We fired a total of 96 bullets, and had 27 hits, i.e. 28%. |

I found it completely impossible to aim both pistols at once, and this was standing completely still and shooting straight ahead at a motionless full-size target. I am not an especially eperienced marksman, but I think the idea of using two guns simultaneously would be quite useless in a real-life firefight. |

The only way I can see it as even possibly being useful would be if one could fire accurately with one firearm while using the other firearm aimed in another direction to force people there to keep their head down. Though the shooting in the latter direction would probably be so random that people could safely ignore it. |

Practice enough and I'll bet one could get very good at using two pistols at once. |

But if all you want to do is shoot neat patterns across walls with your handguns, then with a little practice I'm sure you could learn to hold your arms out sideways at the right angle. |

I shoot much better with the weaver stance than I do one handed. Enough so that I wouldn't take the second gun over the ability to put both hands on the pistol. |

Yup. Looks good in the movies, but is probably pretty useless if you can't rehearse the moves beforehand and call "Cut!" if things don't go according to plan. |

There's a movie called "Equilibrium" (basically a combination of Brave New World, Farenheit 451 and 1984) which features something they call Gun-kata - like the regimented combinations of martial arts moves, but with guns rather than fists and feet, rice-flails or big sticks. |

regarding accuracy issues with the second gun, why does it matter? the idea calls this covering fire and suggests that the default position would be in front with the other as in ROTT. this means both guns are aimed as one unit, and when seperated, the other gun is hopelessly inaccurate but still lethal. if a drunk blind guy was shooting at you, his accuracy would be abysmal, but you'd probably still take cover. two guns are unlikely to ever be as accurate as one (if you can aim two as well as i can aim one, you can also aim one better than me) but these games are usually about killing swarms of nasties, if you miss one you'll probably wing another. |

Good idea. Even make your movement direction independent of either shooting arm. That way you can just lay cover fire alongside or behind you, everywhere at once, as you make your escape. Realism != fun, necessarily. + |

had a go on virtua cop today with both guns. it was actually a lot easier than i thought it would be. as i couldn't concentrate wholly on the right, my left hand proved to be more accurate. |

This idea is a little old but it sounds quite feasible now with motion controls like Wii, Kinect, or PS Move. |

When I was playing a space-combat sim I kept trying to find a joystick that would allow two separate motions at the same time (one to steer the ship, the other to steer the turrets): closest I got was logitech something which had a thumb-hat on top of the stick. |
