Jellyfish Desalination

Use jellyfish to desalinate the water

This year's jellyfish attack on Israeli beaches is extremely heavy. Probably its a Zionist plot, but got me thinking:

Harvest the jellyfish, and with pressure use the natural membrane for reverse osmosis. You get clean water, and jellyfish free beaches.

Explain how it's probably a Zionist plot.
rcarty, Jul 06 2011

Explaining how it probably isn't a Zionist plot would probably be more entertaining.
not_morrison_rm, Jul 06 2011

It's to do with the jellyfish codicil to the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Bet they don't have *that* in the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
mouseposture, Jul 07 2011

After the Egyptian Zionist sharks, and the Zionist Jewish dog that wasn't, how can it not be? Did nobody say anything yet on Al Jazeera?

BTW, I myself am a Zionist plot. I wonder what happens when a Zionist plot meets a Zionist plot.

Of course it is NOT a Zionist plot. It was an accident, when somebody in a secret lab near Ashkelon poured out a small glass of hyper concentrated (using a countercurrent exchange mechanism) P. plasters, after thinking they don't work because he read Jutta's anno (now gone...). So you could trace it to HB's fault.

Oh yes, that's good, blame the messenger ...

If I were a Jewish settler in Israel I'd set up a big sign on my land saying "Zionist Plot".

Is there any evidence that Jellyfish are suitable for use as reverse osmosis membranes?

Is there any evidence that they're not?
MaxwellBuchanan, Jul 08 2011

Our reporter asked repeatedly, and the jellyfish would not deny it!
mouseposture, Jul 08 2011

If it was a Zionist plot, it would be pretty transparent.

So that's what all those Israeli fences are for - to create a de-Cnidaria.

Anybody care to give a tech remark about this idea?

BTW most Jewish "settlers" don't have "land". Its mostly cities and neighborhoods with apartment buildings, on land bought (back) with full money, but mostly with some sort of confidentiality because the Arabs have a death warrant on anyone selling land to Jews.
pashute, Jul 15 2011

That's almost a near inversion of the Olden Days ban on Christian usury, from which the Jews, being Jews, were exempt. It kinda suggests that a gentile might rock up to Israel/Palestine, buy a bunch of land and enter into perpetual lease arrangements with the Zionists.

       Back to original idea.

Anybody care to give a technical remark?
pashute, Jul 15 2011

[MechE]'s question qualifies as a technical remark. Here's another: <link>
mouseposture, Jul 15 2011

Thanks for the links. Looking further into it the answer is YES. Jellyfish, although having similar salinity inside and outside, still have a semi- permeable membrane, which will not let the salt out in freshwater, causing them to grow (blow up in American) and finally explode (blow up in American).
pashute, Jul 17 2011

       The next question:

Given that jellyfish will have to be dead for safe handling (tentacles removed and stretched over a frame for RO), how long will the membrane last after death?
MechE, Jul 18 2011

The Isrealis can't possibly be backing the JLA (Jellyfish Liberation Army); they've already used up thier entire Covert Aquatic Attacks budget releasing killer sharks near Egyptian beach resorts.
Alterother, Jul 18 2011

Ah, crap, somebody already beat me to the shark joke.
Alterother, Jul 18 2011

Yesterday our car broke down on the way to the beach. So instead we had a nice walking tour and kite flying session near our home. This morning someone showed us his burns from just dipping his feet and hands in the water.

[MechE] A few years ago I remember seeing dead Jellyfish days after they were washed up on the beach in a shaded place, and still quite large.

I recently read that the Jellyfish in Japan are a problem for the nuclear reactors, and for the Israeli coal power station in Hadera.
