International inmate export

Modern-day prison colonies in advanced countries with inhospitable weather.

The British had a good way of dealing with convicts: Sending them to what was a remote and barren land, far away from society (Australia). I propose a modern take on this. Large prisons could be constructed in Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) and Nunavut (an arctic province in Canada governed by Eskimos/Inuit) for violent offenders and prisoners at risk of escape. Why you ask? Because these areas are extremely remote and dangerous - to escape would mean to die of exposure or to be killed by carnivores such as polar bears and wolves. It would provide additional income for the governments involved. The government of the jurisdiction in which the offender was convicted would pay the host government a mutually agreed upon sum of money per year to keep the inmate. Someone proposed something similar at the half-bakery, but he suggested a place with hot weather (could be a deterrent to escape but much less likely) Of course the host government would also be paid for transportation to and from the prison. Foreign trade for the 21st century.

The Soviets had this idea long before you.

What might make this idea somewhat more original is if you put the polar bears and wolves *inside* the prison...

Camping in Siberia... ah, the memories.

But they've done nothing to deserve such treatment. Poor things!

Dead people can't hurt anyone. No transportation costs, no worrying if they've found a way off the island, no guards to pay... Simple. Effective.

This is so well baked that Heinlein wrote it as the plot of "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress." Joe-Bob says "Check it out."

       Who's Joe-Bob?

Heinlein also groks that imprisonment is a "wrongness". I'll have to pick up "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress." Thanks, [ato_de].

Joe-Bob was a movie reviewer in the '80s. May still be around. Rated everything by the number of breasts and gallons of blood. If the nubers were high enough he would give it a "Check it out" seal of approval. This is not to imply that "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" is all about blood and breasts, I was just using the old Joe-Bob reference because I've been watching "I love the '80s" on VH1.

       [UB] I'm not that generous.

I myself have very high nubers.
