Rumble strips; effective at getting your attention when you drowsily drift outside the painted highway lane. What if rumble strips could be used to dissuade drivers from camping in the passing lane?
I'm preemptively addressing comments about road congestion in big cities making traditional traffic
laws quaint and out of touch...by ignoring those comments.
In many American jurisdictions there are posted highway signs advising drivers to "keep right except to pass" and "left lane for passing only". These are largely ignored, lightly enforced, but were thoughtfully placed and need to be followed for best use of the roads as designed.
Shallow rumble strips are carved in the left 1/3 of the left lane. Only in 50 foot long segments spaced half mile apart. So a quick "brrrr" felt every 20-30 seconds until you merge back right. Only the left 1/3 so motorcycles can use the lane.
The idea as designed can help reinforce the message posted on highway signs, by annoying drivers enough to make them choose to keep right.
