According to the linked article, in-car air polution is quite serious even in closed vent situations.

Add built in ionizers into the ventilation systems of cars to reduce pollutants.

In Car Ionic Breeze Car Air Purifier http://www.sharperi...catid=202&catpage=1
(Since they supposedly generate their own breeze, I'm not sure why they'd need to be in the ventilation system.) [half, Oct 04 2004, last modified Oct 05 2004]

Bah - those things are virtually useless. Consumer Reports did a big thing about how its effectiveness didn't nearly justify the cost.

Their stupid 5-minute commercial shows someone wiping soot off of the inner rod with a paper towel... My floor gets dirty, too, but that doesn't mean it's cleaning the air!

Actually, I suffer from hay-fever type allergies... I'm telling you nay-sayers that these things DO work. I'm not speaking from reading a consumer report, I'm speaking from having tried them. The downside is that you really need about 3 in an average sized house.

my volkswagen has a dust and pollen filter in the ventilation system. not ionic. i think a lot of new cars have these standard.

You could map the controls so that the device does the exact opposite, or nearly exact opposite, action from what the controls says it will do.
