Human Rights surveillance UAV over closed regimes

Using off the shelf parts, create a UAV controlled by HAM radio to patrol suspected areas via GPS, and send regular images via HAM radio.

Later on, if money is not as tight, use satellite radio for live feeds.

Next step could be unmanned drones deployed by air.

Most important principle is the ability to have an eye in the sky for non governmental organizations.

Like this, but lower-altitude? http://www.bbc.co.u...ia-pacific-13272198

I have enough issues with security cameras. Not sure I'd be keen on an invisible UAV photographing my every move in detail.

It'll happen. Time was, images like these <link> were available only to governments. In time, UAVs'll, become cheap enough for hoi polloi. The invisible UAV spying on [MaxwellBuchannan] will be piloted not by Amnesty International, but by some random guy on Youtube.

How much data can be pushed through HAM radio these days?
RayfordSteele, May 04 2011

With the right compression, 28kBaud. Enough for a Webcam- grade video at 30fps, or decent stills every few seconds. If you don't have live video feed, the drone's going to need pretty good autonomy, although that's not rocket science.

Best to have it store hi-res video offline and dump it when it comes in for refuelling, keep the low-res vid channel for targeting and nav.

But if you don't like a political regime, why not just change it? There are plenty of precedents, and it keeps the military happy, busy and out of trouble.

//Best to have it store hi-res video offline and dump it// Perhaps it could drop a spool of tape somewhere north of the Arctic Circle, to be collected by Patrick McGoohan.

That would be cool … can Sean Connery be there too?

I just want to know wat's wrong with CHICKEN radio, or BEEF for that matter. Does it make a difference to the bandwidth?

       No, the waistline.

Presumably that's to make sure human rights are being infringed sufficiently?
not_morrison_rm, May 06 2011

Sufficiently to justify using armed force to take over the country and, coincidentally, its natural and economic resources, including- if possible- oil.

Everyone will have their own UAVs to patrol, drop messages / poop, fight other UAVs, etc. Regimes will collect these UAVs from the sky and hold them captive, showing their frantically wiggling cameras nothing but glowing propaganda and smiling children with photos of the Leader.

Ultimately because of the ability to build them with off-the shelf parts from nearly any shelf, UAVs will replace envoys and all other methods of communicating with foreigners. UAVs will then be used domestically to augment telecommuting, help with law enforcement, child care and so on.

I can see the whole of humanities resources being diverted to one huge supercomputer which just spends all its time trying to work out the flight paths of all these UAV's.

So when the aliens land, they just find a load of bones and a swarm of UAV's all filming each other. It will end up being the Marie Celeste mystery of the universe...
not_morrison_rm, May 07 2011

The Vatrians of Telkkos IV already did just that. Other species now harvest the UAV's and sell them as pets.
