When watching politicians talk I don't really hear what they're saying because I become mesmerized by their hand gestures. I also don't care what they're saying because they're not talking to me anyway, they're talking to the sheep that take them seriously.

So after watching some clown doing these hand gymnastics, I was talking to somebody about one particular gesture where the hand is in a fist and the thumb is sticking partially up, like your'e giving a semi thumbs up sign, and making a hammering motion to drive the point home. (It's a particularly slimy politician from my state who name doesn't need mentioning, you can apply this to any party or politician) I posited that it was symbolic of having the listener squished under the speaker's thumb and somebody pointed out what it more resembled and blew my mind...

It's how you hold a ruler or stick if you're hitting them over the head with it. They're symbolically gesturing as they talk, "Know your place proles! I am your leader and you will cower as I bash you over the head with my superiority!".

So as AI gets better and better, you can point your camera at the person promising greater goodness for maximum maximality, and the hand gesture reading device could say "This asshole's full of shit."

Can also work with obvious stuff like crossed arms, facial expressions people make while lying etc. Newest feature is translating sign language.

If this isn't being worked on or out there already, it will be. That's not a maybe, that's a certainty.

Most people do it, I think, because they're coached by someone like this https://youtu.be/ik...si=zJ22QufTmuUUtm_U

This guy's good too but spends too much time on each gesture. https://www.youtube...watch?v=f60IU-tQxMA
Dude, I get it. 20 or 30 seconds for each gesture would be fine. Don't need to ramble on for a half our about triangle hands. [doctorremulac3, Oct 18 2023]

Decades ago I watched a TV show with a prof called Winston who analysed the hand gestures. It was really good.

He talked about "tells" which are subconscious cues about the meaning or intent of a person.

I think Tony Blair was one of the politicians

I think you're mistaking gestures for gesticulations. I know these are technically the same thing, but I consider them distinct. A gesture, in my mind, conveys a clear message, almost like a universal sign language. A thumb dragged through the air in front of your throat, for instance. Everyone knows that means "kill" or "dead". That's a gesture. Gesticulation is much more vague, and is basically just something you do to keep your hands busy so they're not awkwardly hanging by your side, and that you hope either lend some kind of emphasis to what you're saying or at least make you look cool.

//He talked about "tells" which are subconscious cues about the meaning or intent of a person.//

If you've got a link that would be awesome.

//gesture vs gesticulation// Hmm. Interesting distinction. Well then this would be a "gesticulation" analysis app.

Although now that I look both terms up, both of those are said to be something people mostly do when they're cognizant of what they want to get across, maybe less so for gesticulation.

       Wonder if there's another term.

       "Posturing"?
21 Quest, Oct 18 2023

Yea, that sounds more subconscious. Not sure how aware these political units are aware of their constant hand ballet, probably some of them.

But us being ruled over should be aware of what they're subtly implying whether they're cognizant of it or not.

And I do think posturing is more accurate about what's going on, when a cat hunches it's back, yea, it's signaling, but it's also adopting a posture indicative of what it thinks the status of interaction between it and the other entity is.
doctorremulac3, Oct 18 2023

       Interesting link 21.

Kind of makes me think politicians are not only aware of these, but they practice them in the mirror for hours.

[-] either a rant or magic edit: [+/-] because I now believe it's technologically possible.

       Well, neither but okay.

Adding that it can translate sign language.
doctorremulac3, Oct 19 2023

My only issue with the idea isn't that it won't "work", per se... But you'll be interpreting a bunch of gibberish. Even if a politician does actually say anything detectable with his gesticulations, he probably isn't cognizant enough of what his arms are doing to say anything meaningful at all. He's going off looks, he's going off what the "experts" tell him the audience will think of certain gestures/postures. He could just be making himself comfortable. Get 3 different experts to tell you what clasping your hands together over your balls means, and you'll probably get 3 different answers. The app will tell you it means he's insecure around all the other big dick energy in the room, but in reality he's just got a bad right shoulder and a cramp in his left hand from staying up all night writing his speech and that's the only comfortable position he can find.

There’s a terrific TV series with Tim Roth named “Lie to Me” about a guy who codifies unconscious facial gestures and has a business consulting with lawyers and law enforcment. He, and his staff, “read” interviewees to find the truth. Great series, with a lot of research backup, very well-plotted and written. His colleague Kelli Williams is a magnificent statuesque brunette and it’s worth watching just for her. Tim Roth is one of my favorites since Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. He gets a lot of work. Very instructive, and suggests that analyzing only the face is sufficient to suss out the underlying tensions without the arms and hands and body posture, which can be trained. The face, evidently, cannot.

       Well there you go.

If a person can do it a computer can be programmed to do it, probably better.
doctorremulac3, Oct 19 2023

You've stumbled into a real application here that would seem immensely useful if it doesn't already exist as an app for the deaf. I'd be shocked if someone out there hasn't already created it in some form. If they haven't, then get to it man, hire some app code crunchers, and sell it to Elon.

As far as political speeches go, it just needs to translate the distance between hands of the concertina gesticulation to 'how much I am bullshitting.'

Update. Doh. It already exists in the form of Hand Talk Translator on Google Play.
RayfordSteele, Oct 19 2023

Does it translate sign language or the other stuff? Do you have a link? Like I said, surprised if work hasn't been done on this.

Okay, there's a sign language translator, (link) but I think it only works one way, turning words into sign language, which is the same as a sign language book. Not seeing where you can aim a phone at somebody using sign language where it puts it puts it into words in real time, but I'd be surprised if somebody hasn't at least suggested it.

Didn't Hal 9000 sense that one of the astronauts was very stressed by analyzing his voice and posturings or something?

As far as hiring somebody to do this, I'd have to patent it first and I'm sure somebody's thought of this. The sign language part anyway.
doctorremulac3, Oct 19 2023

You may be right. Here's what I found going the other way. <link>
RayfordSteele, Oct 19 2023

Whoa! Okay, the basic systems are already functional.

I'm pretty sure the people who did that are well aware of what can be done with it. It's gonna happen.
doctorremulac3, Oct 22 2023

The reverse would produce an image or video for words you don't want to say outright.
